January 2018 100/200-Yard Benchrest Challenge

Guidelines:

Notice: : These guidelines are for January's 2018 100/200-Yard .17/.22 Rimfire Benchrest Challenge. Hopefully it is pretty self-explanatory, but if you have any questions, please PM me for clarification or post your question in the thread.

The classes will be divided into three (3) groups. Factory Sporter, Modified and Honorary. Only CZ or BRNO rifles are allowed in the Factory Sporter and Modified classes. Any rifle capable of chambering a .17 or .22 caliber rimfire round is permitted in the Honorary class.

Factory Sporter: Rifles can include trigger modifications (including aftermarket trigger replacement,) bolt work, striker mods, etc., but it must use a factory CZ barrel. No tuners are allowed, even with factory barrels. Stocks must be factory OEM. No limitations will be included on optics. Use whichever power scope you wish.

Modified: Will include any rifle which hosts a 3rd party barrel, (Lilja, Benchmark, Shilen, etc.) and/or non-OEM stock. Again, no limitation on optics.

Honorary: Though he is not a CZ shooter, this class was begun due to the inspiration of Smoothtrigger and his desire to participate in our Challenges. This class will include any non-CZ/BRNO rifle of .17 or .22 rimfire caliber and will also include any action capable of chambering either round. Again, no limitation on optics.

Posted Targets: During the Spring, Summer and Fall months, consider this to be from March through November, inclusive, all submitted targets must be shot outdoors at 100 yards. During Winter months, consider this to be from December through February, inclusive, participants have the option to shoot indoors, but will be shooting under a Class entitled "Indoor." The "Indoor" class will be open to any make and/or model of .17 or .22 caliber rimfire. There will be no restriction on optics and the choice of ammunition will be left to the shooter's discretion.

Use those sighter bulls to fine tune your setup.
Fire 10 shots per target for score, 1 shot at each bull, tally your score, record it on each target.
These targets are scored "Best Edge." If you nip, clip or otherwise hit the higher scoring ring...you get the higher score.
Nick or clip the center dot for a 10, obliterate the center dot for the X.

When you print the target be sure to set it to print "Actual size" and 100 percent which should give you the correct target size.

Supporting The Rifle/Rests: The rifle can be supported front and rear; however no one-piece or vice-type rests are allowed. Bipods/rear bags, mechanical rests (front and/or rear) may also be used either from the bench or prone position….shooter's choice.

Calibers can include any 17 or 22 caliber rimfire in any class. There are no restrictions on bullet type. You may use match ammo, HV, HP or whatever it is with which you typically shoot.

Remember to include the necessary information when posting your target:

1. Shooter's RFC screen name.
2. Rifle description - Make/Model
3. Ammunition used
4. Date of target
5. Class - Sporter, Modified, Honorary

For those with any number of CZ's/BRNO's and other brands, feel free to shoot in any class at your discretion. Please post only your best target from each class.

Target Guidelines: 200-Yard Challenge

Fire a total of 10 shots per page...best edge scoring...nick/hit the center dot for the X.

In the event a shooter feels a mistake has been made in reference to a competitor's score or the shooter's final position among participants, an RFC Moderator will make the final determination.

Please have all targets into the thread which reads "January 2018 100-Yard Benchrest Challenge," no later then 12:00 midnight, January 28th.

When your target is submitted, it MUST have all pertinent information included such as shooter's screen name, rifle type/model, ammunition used, etc.

So Honorary class can be factory or modified in the same class? Also on a 455 that came with both 22 & 17hmr either barrel can be used in the factory class, right? A BRNO mod 4 will be factory class if nothing has been changed, right? Thanks!

I hope we see at least one BRNO this month. I don't remember seeing any of us shoot one in this match yet.
I think I could lay hands on one if I really wanted to, but there are too many irons in my fire already..
Now, if only the temperature outside would climb, if not above the freezing mark, at least to a bearable level..

Thank you jaia for stepping up.

Jaia we all owe you a BIG thank you for stepping up and taking over the rains of this great Challenge. Bob revived this challenge, and with the help of not only yourself but that of Rick and Smooth and I'm sure others that I'm not aware of, turned it into the premiere challenge on RFC, and it's great to see this will continue. So on behalf of myself and many many others here I want to thank you very much for stepping up. It couldn't be in better hands.:bthumb:

And thank you Bob for all the time and effort you invested in making this the great Challenge that it is. We are all hoping and praying for your 100% recovery, and please update us on your surgery.

are there temperature handicaps?

Sure, there are a whole bunch of handicaps in this challenge.

For starters we're shooting with rimfire ammunition.
That's a major handicap in and of itself.

We have no idea of the quality of the ammo we purchase until we shoot it.
Then there's the handicaps provided by the local conditions,
like wind, rain, snow, dust, heat, cold, bugs
and the yahoos having a mad minute two benches over.
Image

Add to that the handicaps of age, visual infirmities, caffeine and sugar,
it's a wonder any of us can even keep our shots on paper. :eek:man:

Would you like to add any others to make the challenge more interesting?
Image

I'm so easily entertained, but ya'll know that already.

Print some targets, take 'em out, staple them up
at 100 and 200 yards, then shoot those targets.
Do the best you can with what you've been dealt
then cherry pick the best results to enter into the challenge.
We are not here to compete, much.
We are here to see what you can do with your rifle
at distances for which the rimfire was never intended.

Give it y'er best, post the results, enjoy y'erself. :D

By the way, after figuring out how to produce 2 moa at 200 yards
half moa at 50 doesn't seem that difficult. Just a fringe benefit of the challenge.

I had no intention of shooting today, nor for the next several days because the weather forecast was calling for light rain along with significant winds.

But......................................I woke up to calm conditions, and no rain.
8:00 am: No wind and no rain.
9:00 am: No wind and no rain.
10:00 am No wind and no rain.
11:00 am No wind and no rain.
And by no wind I mean it was dead calm.

So I finally decided that I had to go. Mounted up 4 targets and hit the range at noon.

Look at that limp flag, the smoke going straight up, and those clouds at 10,000+ feet flat as a pancake. Great conditions for sure.

I moved my scope back one notch on my "DIP" rail, so I had to do a re-sight.
Surprisingly that didn't mess up the zero that much.
I don't normally post my sighter target, but the last 5 shots on this one were (4) tens and (1) nine.
Image

Shot my 2nd target, which was pretty dang good, but I thought I could do better.
Image

So with great anticipation I dialed the elevation down just a bit for my 3rd target...........

And then some DOOFUS came onto the range and shut it down for maintenance from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.

So here I was on a roll with visions of total dominance of this target, only to have the rug pulled out from underneath me at the last minute.:)

Color me "Grumpy".

Man that is some consistent HMR ammo Smooth. I know i've said it before that is amazing at 200yards. I use mine for hunting out to 150yds with confidence but the next 50yards after that really starts humbling the little calibre. Not with your TNT and that barrel though. Good work.

In other news, I have knackered the tendon in the top of the my right arm. It has been bothering me for about 3 months and I have been trying not to use it too much but I recently took my nephew sledging and bent down and put my hand on his back to push him on his sledge down a hill and agony ensued. I have not shot since. Anything that involves having my arm raised in any way is not good.

Hate tendon strains. They take ages to heal but I know from experience that they just need as much total rest as poss.

I might not be able to shoot this target this month unless there is dramatic improvement but I can still enjoy the efforts of everyone else on here.

Yeah, that sighter targets last 5 shots had me pretty jazzed.

I originally had a different noun describing the dude who stopped me from shooting something epic.:)
It rimes with "Boron", but that word is now consider to be hurtful. Seemed to me to be kinda dead on.
I mean who shuts down a range in the middle of the day, to say nothing about messing up my possible chance at becoming an RFC shooting legend.

But I'm over it. Yep .... I'll probably never think about it again.

Well it was a great day, for today I received my gate card to Tomball Gun Club and am now officially a member. :D. This was my first opportunity to shoot the 200 yard challenge, and my first time shooting at that range with a 22. My only other opportunity was years ago with my .270. There just isn't a 200 yard range within a reasonable distance from my home. But with TGC just 15 minutes away that's no longer a problem. New member orientation took place today and ended at about 11:30. It was a beautiful day in Houston with a high of 64 and clear skies. Winds were calm but by 11:30 it was blowing from the NE at about 10 to 15 mph. So instead I did some pistol shooting first in hopes the wind would calm down some. Finally about 3:00 it did but it was still between 5 to 10 mph. Good enough.

I shot the 100 first, best score was an 81. I only shot 3 targets because I was anxious to get to the 200 incase the winds increase again. I quickly learned I didn't have nearly enough reticle elevation for 200 yards. Due to a bone head move I thought I had cranked in all the elevation I had and ended up using 4 mils of holdover. Turns out I had plenty of elevation left, as I discovered once I got home. After sighting in and some practice to get the hang of things, my best score was a 78 2X. My next best was a 76. This was a lot of fun, very challenging and I think I'm hooked. :bthumb: I was quite pleased with my results for my first time. But one thing's for sure, unless you have a perfectly calm day wind flags are a must

The actual distance according to my rangefinder was 202 yards. I hope this doesn't disqualify me
..lol
