Izmash Sporter project

I just got back from the range after shooting an IR50/50 target with my Izmash Biathlon Basic mounted in the Sporter stock I made for it. I was surprized, to say the least. The target was better than most of the targets I shot in competition last season with my CZ, a 237-6x(I am NOT a good sporter shooter). Conditions were fairly steady right to left wind between 5-10mph. I got caught more than once when the wind died, and the POI dropped into the 8 ring. I've got the trigger down to a crisp 12 oz or so, and I know if I could get it down farther, I could really shoot this rifle well. The strait pull bolt is great for getting shots off quickly, and you can practically drop a bullet in on top of the mag. and push it in with the bolt.

The bad news....so far, it's favorite ammo is Fed. UM-1 :shakehead I've got about 4 bricks of it left, and it's my Suhls favorite ammo, too. I don't think I'll have enough to last through the 47 matches I've got a chance to shoot between now and Oct :( I wonder if Bob Collins has any experience with Izmash Eley preferences? I bet not! Maybe it will like the fast Eley. Let the ammo testing begin :bonk:

I'll post pics of the stock and the trigger sometime, if not this evening, then definetly over the weekend. I don't have a finish on the stock yet, I'm thinking of a dye, instead of stain. I like the reds and blues I've seen on the line in sporter class. Anyone have any idea how hard it is to dye wood?

Libertyman, if a gunsmith ever saw what I did to the trigger, I'd probably get a good swift kick in the arse :smashfrea You know that big stiff spring that's in there? I used my diagonal cutters to get in between a couple of coils, and stretched it out, weakening it. After I did that, I noticed that the point the spring is anchored to at the bottom of the trigger is a threaded post. I got the spring out, and unthreaded the post, lightening the spring even more. The only other thing I did was use some emery cloth to polish the sear and trigger faces. I'm thinking about treating those faces with moly lube, maybe that will help, too.

Gary,
Did you get the pictures and bench dimensions I sent you? Sometimes I don't think AOL delivers my e-mails

Todd,
I got the pics. Thanks! From your's and some other's information, I've built the first form. I'm going to make one for my backyard range as a test so I can give first hand info on the construction.

I've dyed a few stocks. It's really easy. The main thing is to use a pre-stain wood conditioner and to keep trying the dye on a witness board until you get the color correct. If you are interested, I'll send you a website where I bought my dye from.

renagade,

I'd like to see the stock , my trigger breaks clean but the stock is too long for me
LOP @14" and the pistol grip is too far from the trigger for my small hands. small handed lefty. But this is definately the right handed rifle for the leftys.
I thought of cutting a section of the grip out and dowling it back to shorten the reach
any thoughts on he subject.

thanks

I stopped at a hardware store today and found some Minwax Accents stain. I bought the Midnight Blue, which just turned brown on a piece of leftover mahogany stock, and Hunter Green, which looks really cool. As soon as I get offline, I'm going to stain it up. I'll post pics when it's done.

Southpaw, the LOP is easy enough to fix. I've got short arms, too, and I've cut an inch of the butt of every offhand rifle I have. The pistol grip being too far from the trigger is tougher. You're idea could work, but it would be tough to make it look good, unless you plan on refinishing the whole stock. I'd use a good polyurethane wood glue, like "Gorilla Glue". It should hold up. Good luck with it.

Izmash Sporter project Reply to Thread

Renegegade,
I e-mailed EAA asked them several questions such as youth stock, 17 hm2
and 17 hmr in the Izmash basic. the only reply I got was that the 17 hmr was coming soon.

Lets see how much they want for a spare stock. I don't want to butcher the only stock I have.

will post my progress

Regards

I bet Knitepoet will be interested in this thread, he's got the itch for a Basic. Maybe it'll be the proverbial "straw".

Good luck with your project Todd, looks like it'll be a shooter! JL
Nope JL, I'd decided I was getting one before I saw this thread :snipersmi
Looks good Todd, I hope to be breaking one in in the not to distant future :D

Basic Trigger!

Todd, and all..
My basic shoots the Wolf Match Target I bought from Gary (Tn. Hillbilly) best of any of the ammo I have tested. I do sort my ammo, though. My groups measured from 1/4" (Best) to 3/8" with the Wolf. I did shoot some good groups with RWS R-50 and UM-1. Both shot 5/16" groups as their best. All of these were after doing a trigger job.
I bought the rifle from Joe Haller who broke it in on the Wolf MT. He told me he shot 500 rounds of the Wolf through it before it would shoot well. Joe sold it to me on the way up to his Suhl. Also, Joe shot some good scores with it, in the 240's as I remember.
I did a similar trigger job on it. I took out the spring Todd mentioned and replaced it with a spring, same length, only one with 20% thinner wire. Also polished all mating surfaces and lubed them with Brownell's Action Magic. My pull is a crisp 12 oz now. Not bad considering the way the non-adjustable trigger is made. It's a bear to take apart. Wish mine had the adjustable trigger and the new style stock. I'm totally happy with the accuracy and the trigger pull now.
Just had a similar "Underwhelming" phone conversation with EAA yesterday. I am interested in buying a SM-2 and/or a URAL 6.2. I'm also interested in the Biathlon 7-3 and 7-4 that I like very much. Since EAA doesn't stock them, I sent an e-mail to IZMASH asking price and availability. Their return e-mail direced me to EAA.. So, I called and got someone who really wasn't customer oriented in their sales dept. All I could get out of him was that he thought they might get the rifles in on a boat in June... I had to keep pulling information out of him as he didn't want to talk.. It was a bad scene. So, I sent another e-mail back to the same guy at IZMASH telling him I wasn't satisfied with the EAA information. And, that I needed specific information on the rifles. Maybe, it will filter back to EAA.. I'm not holding my breath about EAA being more cooperative, however..
Take care,
Don

Izmash competition report/brag

Well, the Izmash got it's first taste of IR50/50 competition Saturday, at the Liverpool Rod and Gun Club, near Syracuse, NY. Conditions were windy, competition was stiff, but the $269 Izmash took 3rd place! If I hadn't blown the last shot into the 6 ring, I would have had second place, instead. I knew I had close to a 240 going, and had 5 minutes left, with one bull to shoot.....wait....wait...2 minutes left....NOW! :banghead3 Ended up with a 236, which is a pretty good sporter score, for me! Maybe I won't choke next weekend at NH, and I'll get up into the 240's. :t I've only done it twice with the CZ in 14 matches, and the little Russkie gun is knocking on the door already! :D
