Is this normal? 18.5” Beyer barrel

I have a 18.5” Beyer barrel built 22lr AR that I use in Project Appleseed and the CMP rimfire matches. The accuracy is EXCELLENT. I’ve been using CCI standard velocity and it’s always ran with no problems other than bolt problems( broken firing pin/spring). I’m using a PSA stainless bolt with Boonie Packer mag adapter w/ S&W mags.

So i was told they use a liner for their .22lr barrel but is this normal? It still runs great but don’t want it to get worse. Worst case is that I have to replace the barrel but I only have a few hundred rounds through it. I want to find out what is causing this to avoid it from getting worse or damaging another barrel. Thanks for any info!

Looks like they got a little carried away on the extractor relief. I don't think it will affect function at all, but I'd be sure there were no burs or anything that could make contact with the bullet as it enters the chamber. Maybe polish it with a cone-shaped dremel polishing bit. I also can't say whether or not it'll get worse but as fine as that edge is, it wouldn't surprise me if the extractor could continue to deform it.

The brass will likely expand into the void where the extractor rest in the notch. I widened the extractor notch on a DPMS Gen 1 22 LR AR-15 barrel so I could use a CMMG bolt and the new BDM 25 round mags. The wear was much worse than your barrel and never caused an issue. A lot of the extraction from 22 LR is because of the blow back action. I’ve seen 22 LR semi autos function reliably with no extractor. The extractor is needed to pull out live cartridges and the ejector kicks the spent brass out of the action.

I’ve found polishing the chamber of 22 LR semi autos improves reliability. I don’t own any Beyer barrels but looking at his web sight he sells barrels with steel 22 LR liners and rifled chrome moly barrels. I can’t tell from the photo which type of barrel you have. There were some BCA barrels where there was defective machining where the notch was unsupported enough it caused issues. In those situations BCA replaced the barrels or refunded the purchase.

I would consider emailing a picture to Beyer and ask if there any concern with this barrel. It might be a situation where the friction from the reciprocating extractor has worn that spot in the notch and may not wear anymore because there is less contact between the extractor and the metal in the notch.

I’ve seen 22 LR semi auto barrels with similar wear so I don’t think this is a unique situation with your barrel. I retired my DPMS Gen 1 barrel because the end of the barrel was worn enough from repeated firing pin hits there wasn’t enough support for the FP to set off cartridges. This barrel had in excess of 60,000 rounds fired in it over 10+ years. A friend milled the end of the barrel smooth but then the chamber was to short. I could re-chamber the barrel but I figured it had paid for itself and I bought a new CMMG barrel.

My point is the OP’s barrel might still last many tens of thousands of rounds if the barrel notch doesn’t wear significantly further.
