On more than one occasion, I have called Cabela's about a rifle they showed in inventory at some distant location, only to get a vague answer regarding availability. After persistent inquiry, I learned that some employee there had a tentative "hold" on the rifle in question. I then insisted on speaking to a manager, which, on only one of several occasions, led to him conceding sheepishly the rifle was still available. One real gem I remember getting away, due to the employee apparently finally committing to buy, was a Dakota 'Lil Sharps in .22 Hornet configured for modern scope use from the factory. It had a light, octagoned barrel, the DST, drop-dead English walnut stocks, and the price was well south of half of the retail price at the time, maybe closer to one third. Man I wanted that rifle, and boy was I mad when Cabela's let it go to an employee instead. I even had credit card in hand, ready to give the number, and an FFL copy ready to fax, but no joy. That was probably the last time I dealt with Cabela's. Honestly, though, and this was years ago, the prices then were often competitive, especially when a rifle had sat unsold for awhile.
