I went into the gun library at Cabelas

I walked by and looked in the shelves, and there sat this thing. 4" pre-lock 617, 6 shot. Looks like new, doesn't even have a cylinder ring on it. So I bought it and am now waiting for the waiting period to get over...................................blah.

On more than one occasion, I have called Cabela's about a rifle they showed in inventory at some distant location, only to get a vague answer regarding availability. After persistent inquiry, I learned that some employee there had a tentative "hold" on the rifle in question. I then insisted on speaking to a manager, which, on only one of several occasions, led to him conceding sheepishly the rifle was still available. One real gem I remember getting away, due to the employee apparently finally committing to buy, was a Dakota 'Lil Sharps in .22 Hornet configured for modern scope use from the factory. It had a light, octagoned barrel, the DST, drop-dead English walnut stocks, and the price was well south of half of the retail price at the time, maybe closer to one third. Man I wanted that rifle, and boy was I mad when Cabela's let it go to an employee instead. I even had credit card in hand, ready to give the number, and an FFL copy ready to fax, but no joy. That was probably the last time I dealt with Cabela's. Honestly, though, and this was years ago, the prices then were often competitive, especially when a rifle had sat unsold for awhile.

I feel the same way, but I happened to stop there because it was on the way to where I shoot trap, and I was early because I hate driving in traffic. (Rush hour NB I-5 starts about 1:00 in the afternoon) So I had to kill some time and just went there to look in the "Gun Library". Doing paper work there is a joke. You would think you are applying for a Top Secret clearance. Bubba grudgingly does the paperwork, then Barney has to come over and check his work! All the while you are standing there waiting. I just wanted the gun, so the hassle was worth it.

Scheels is a dog and pony show too but they do have some good deals on used pistols occasionally. So it can be worth it to be patient. Most pistols do not get shot enough to matter before they get bored with them and have to trade in for the newest and bestest pistol. The pistol I recently acquired w as part of a 3 pistol deal to purchase a Staccato . The trades were all like new with boxes and papers and magazines and optics.

Fishjager - Nice find on the 617. (y) The Cabela’s Gun Library is my first stop every Monday as it’s right next to the Costco where I get my gas and groceries. I also use their online access to the Gun Library which has found a few deals over the years. I like the fact I can get it shipped to my location, with no transfer fees, and I can reject the deal if I find something I don’t like about the firearm. I normally only buy when they have special deals that I can combine with my veterans discount so that keeps the cost down. One can find rather significant differences in prices across the various locations so you just have to do your homework. I did acquire a couple of additions to the collection with their 10% + 10% + 5% deal on the last two Monday specials. One was a pristine S&W Model 63 22 LR that was on my watch list for several years and transferred in from another location.

The 617 4” is one that I have on my watch list using the online Gun Library searches and never saw either one mentioned in this thread, but keeping the online availability current sometimes lags a bit. When compared to online auctions with their premiums, high shipping costs, and then transfer fees … I find I can do better with the Gun Library in many cases. I do agree it was better before Bass Pro bought them.

Nice. I'm in Texas and have a CCL, no longer required but will keep it up. WIth it there is no background check or waiting period, if we ever had one. Back during the covid pandemic I bought a couple of guns at a local shop. The owner really appreciated the license, he said he had a room full of guns where they were waiting for background checks to be completed, there was such a backlog holding up sales.

Our Cabela’s Gun Library is alive and well and currently rated #1 in the country. I find a deal once in a while and usually only buy when additional discounts are in the works. I know this is an older thread, with the original post on a S&W 617… so I will add that I purchased a preowned 617 4” late last week. I should be here in a day or so and will be adding it to my small revolver collection. I had also picked up a Model 63 last December when their 10% + 10% + my Vet Discount of 5% was on so was pleased with that transaction as well. In both cases the revolvers were shipped in to my location. I had inspection prior to accepting, no transfer or shipping fees, and have a year to pay for them.

My Gun Library guys are very knowledgable on most firearms and I have a good relationship with them., occasionally am given discounts before any special discounts are applied. I agree their trade-in prices are lower, but it’s nice to be able to view over 5000 preowned firearms and see what is available. Sometimes they are sold before I get to them, but often I'm able to obtain what I'm after. I've only had one issue over the years and they stood behind the sale and fixed the problem.

Fishjager - Hope you are enjoying your S&W 617 4” (y)

For those of you having Cabela’s ship a Gun Library gun to a store near you… are you being charged shipping?

I was at a Cabela’s in AZ, and had one from there sent up to my local Cabela’s in MN. They whacked me shipping, just like an online purchase.

It was underpriced, so I didn’t let shipping become a dealbreaker, but I had hoped to weasel out of it.

No such luck! 😂
