I think, I hope, I made a good buy

I currently own a 2006 77/22 in a walnut stock. Today at a gun shop I came across a 1988 Paddle stock, stainless with sights. It has green inserts, no idea if they came in other colors. The stock has a few scuffs but no deep scratches etc. No idea how much it’s been used but it appears well cared for. I purchased it for $400+ tax and Dros. I’m guessing I won’t lose much if any if I decide I not to keep it. It was a just cause impulse buy.

There in lays the rub. In California I’m not seeing any prices coming down and getting a ffl to handle a transfer from out of state runs $75 and up. I haven’t see a 77/22 in a lgs for several years so it was hard to guess what a fair price would be. I went with gut feel and blind impulse.
I figure it’s hard to find much of anything under $400 anymore.

The green inserts were a thing at Ruger for about a year and a half or so. They were, as far as I can tell, the first "insert color", touted as DuPont Xenoy material. I had the same on the SP101 that I carried quite a lot. Those inserts may be collectable.... based on the short run of production. They are... a bit gackly tho

Good deal, I bought a walnut one for 850 on GB 1k by the time all the other costs were factored.
I have the green inserts on my stainless. 308. I like them better.
I’ve purchased from on line retailers and it cost me another $75 for the FFL plus the shipping etc.. All the dealers here know what to do to try and keep you buying direct and rarely budging on prices. One place wanted $20 per thousand for ammo bought on line. Another refused it all together.

STOP IT. U know that we know that you know you stole it. Don’t padder to us OKAY. Oh look at me . I’m not sure if I got screwed. What say you. If you feel you that way , go back and give the guy you hoodwinked an extra 300.00
Shame on you if you took advantage of someone. Based on your knowledge. SHAME ON YOU.
You’re joking right? Took advantage? This wasn’t a private individual , it’s from a Gun Store and a chain gun store at that. The stock was covered in dust so I’m guessing it had been in storage or no one was interested in that paddle stock. Maybe others saw something I did not. The store is located in a heavily populated area so there’s no close by place for shooting.

When I mentioned dreading the 3 hour grid lock drive back home they offered to transfer it to an affiliate store close to my home.

So maybe I got lucky, maybe I didn’t. I honestly wasn’t sure when I bought it if it was a good year or a year known for bad barrels etc. I still don’t.

It arrived at my local store yesterday so payment and paperwork is done. Now the 10 day wait.
Currently my 2006 model (walnut) is at CPC for a work over. This one will probably go as well after I’ve tried it for a bit.

If by chance I wanted to mount this one to a wooden stock as an option what all is needed? I see I’ll need the bottom plate with mag release but is there anything else? I’m not intending to change to wood stock however these rifles will eventually go to my sons so I want who ever gets the paddle to have the option. I assume it’s best to purchase the parts now and set aside.

You need the triggerguard/mag release assembly, magazine well liner, and both action screws to put a wood or plastic non boat paddle stock on your boat paddle model 77/22

77/22’s barrels were slip fit for quite a while, but they went to screwed in at the end.
Early 77/22 22lr rifles could only swap for 22lr barrels because of specific cuts on the bottom of the bolt.
Slightly later slip fit 77/22 lr could swap out barrels and bottom metal for 22WMR and 17HMR barrels and magazines.

I picked it up today. I’d post a picture but I have no idea how. Trigger pull is almost 5lbs so I’ll probably go with the Volquartsen trigger sear kit. I have the Basix in my other 77 so thinking try something different.

It really needed a cleaning and it has a prominent carbon ring. I’ve got it soaking with keen for the next 7-8 hours. I’d soak over night but I’m taking it out to see what I have tomorrow morning at 5 am.

I have 5bh scope rings on my other 77 but they are not high enough to use with a 50 objective and clear the rear sight on this rifle. Not sure what rings will work but I’ll need to address it.

Unless this rifle surprises me I’ll send it to CPC once my other 77 gets back.

First outing. I could only fit a 3-9 power scope till I get taller rings. This restricted me to 30 yards because I simply can’t see the bullet holes at 50 with 9 power. It grouped great at 30 yards but I don’t feel 30 yards is enough to give any real indication of accuracy.

30 yards aside there was another issue. I had more fail to fire than not. It was rare I could get 2 rounds in a row to fire. The strikes on the rim seemed lite to my eyes. The Brand of ammo made no difference. It did eject all spent casings with no issue. There Seems to be a lot of slop in the bolt so maybe it’s the cause. I’ll order shims and try that first. I suppose it could also be the striker spring?
