How to adjust the 10/22 sights?

I'm wondering how to adjust the iron sights on a 10/22. I know the manual says to tap "the rear sight base" with a brass rod, but what fo they mean by that? Which part of the sight is the base? Pics would be especially welcome!
Thanks!

Base.

The base is the lowest part of the rear sight that fits into the dovetail slot that is cut out of the barrel. Tap the base in the direction that you want your point of aim to move, ie shooting to the left your point of aim needs to move to the right, so you need to move the sight base to the right. I'll just add that you use a brass rod to keep from scratching the sight or the rifle barrel. Tap the brass rod with a hammer. Easy does it. You want to make very small corrections. Shoot and make any more corrections as needed. Remember, a little goes a long way.

And NC Britt is right. It's a pretty poor system. About the only "good" thing you can say about it is it's cheap. Not inexpensive. Just cheap.

Those little unsightly marks sometimes from the brass punches

That's why Ruger provides a scope base with the 10/22s, Crappy open sights. :Blasting_ :Blasting_ BTW, If your brass rod does leave marks on the sight base you can scrub the crap out of it with ammonia to leach the brass off of the steel base or if you can scrounge up some "Sweet's 7.62" cleaner it works even better but don't use it on stainless steel!
