Hooded Front Sight

Looking at buying a Henry 22LR, blued, not Golden Boy and like everything about it but my old eyes need all the light I can get on the front sight. The rifle I am looking at has a hooded front sight. Gun shop guy didn't know but my question is whether that hood can be easily removed without going to a gunsmith.

Any info is appreciated.

Yes, the hood slides right off.

I found the stock front sight blade to be way too wide. I quickly replaced it with the Hi-Viz sight. It just swaps right in. One little screw involved. My H001 soon became the .22 I shoot 95% of the time.

The OEM sight is dove-tailed into the front barrel band, so you can always look at other options, such as a brass bead sight from Marbles.

How does the peep sight and the standard H1-Viz sight work? Or did you have to raise the front Hi-Viz sight. It looks to me the peep sight sits higher than the standard iron sights. I am thinking of going with Hi-Viz front and rear. If the peep works ok with the standard Hi-Viz sight, I may go that way. I like a peep sight, but I would have to get a larger dia aperage. Old eyes.
Also how does the peep sight work with the standard Henry front sight. If compatible then I won't have to get a front Hi-Viz sight.

Thank you very much guys. That removes my only concern. I only got to look at the sights in artificial light in the gun shop, not in sunlight at a target. I'll try it with the hood first but I think I am going to need more light and the hi viz sights have worked for me on handguns so that sounds like a good option.

Been using scopes for years but I just don't enjoy shooting with scopes as much as with iron sights, even though I do not shoot as well with iron sights. I do this for fun and that Henry looks and feels like it will be a lot of fun. I was amazed at the fit and finish and smooth action given the low price.

It turns out neither the shop guy nor I noticed his one Henry was 22 WMR not 22LR. Always wanted a WMR but I think I need a LR for now so I will be on the look for one. They did have a Golden Boy in 22LR but it seems to have a different stock and it does not fit me. The blued one fit perfectly.

Thanks again for the help.

Got One

Well, I found a shop that had Henrys. GBs, H001 round barrel rifles, octogon barrelled and a large lever loop carbine. Limited myself to the standard rifle but would have liked to buy that carbine as well.

Beautiful rifle and a pure pleasure to shoot. I thought I could not expect the accuracy I get from my scoped bolt rifles and was hoping I could find an ammo brand that would give me a 2" 5 shot group at 50 yards. I got several 1" groups with a few different brands, including Federal bulk brick which is as cheap as I can buy these days. Not saying it averaged that good, but it definitely averaged under 2". Given my old eyes and no scope and not a true bench rest and windy conditions and I am extremely happy with its accuracy.

Took me a while to get windage right as I am used to adjustable sights but after two range trips I finally got windage zeroed. Elevation is another matter. With the sights as low as it will go I am a few inches high with high velocity and a few inches low with standard velocity at 50 yards. I am searching for the possibility of a higher front sight since I will shoot mostly high velocity as long as it is the cheaper ammo available.

The hooded sight was not a problem, though I did get bright sunny days. I checked out the sight options sticky and I'm guessing the Hi Viz sight is the same height as the factory front sight but I will call and check on that. Until then, I am using Kentucky elevation and holding a bit low at 50 yards. At 25 yards I don't need to do that.

This is a terrific rifle. Haven't had so much simple pleasure shooting in a long time.

Congrats on your new Henry! I have an H001, and I put a Hi-Viz front sight on it. I'm really happy with it.

There are many sight options available. Marbles makes adjustable semi-Buckhorn rear sights that are good. You can also put a tang sight on it for long range shooting.

I don't use scopes, but it's really easy to put on on the H001.

I would like to go with a Skinners peep, but it costs as much a complete set of H-Viz. Don't want to go with a peep and then still have to replace the Henry front sight. I see Skinners has a replacement for the Henry front sight, but then replacing both gets real expensive. I am on a retirees budget. :(

Thanks rimreaper

"the way I will setup my GB or Frontier when I get one" if we get to vote, my vote is to get`em both !!!

I cut a small piece of plywood, and "mounted" the hood on the edge of the wood….then secured this arrangement in a vise, clamping down on the wood

The initial cuts were made with a dremel tool, and one of these wheels

http://www.amazon.com/DIAMOND-Ceram...0012DLA3U/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1372360392&sr=8-5&keywords=dremel+diamond+burs

(if you use an undersized wheel ,it'll give you a better opportunity to finish it nicely on the next step)

I followed this with a small round file to smooth out and straighten the cuts

Finally, a little dab of cold blue (Oxpho Blue) on a Q-tip to recolor any raw areas

The entire cutting process can be done with just a round file, just takes longer

The rear dovetail slot is filled with an old leaf sight, cut down, filed and touch-up blued

Thank you for the great tutorial. I think the GB has almost too much G for the B in me (BLASPHEMY!!!!), thus I'm inclined to lean toward the Frontier and embellish it with just the right amount of shine like your's. Blackish and Goldish always look good, imo, but it has to be just the right balance...more black than gold (or brasslite). Maybe I'll add a GB butt-plate or even a GB forend band if its not quite enough. Or go backward and order a blued receiver cover to put on the GB and store the GB brasslite(sp?) cover in the safe. Possibilities. GBs are great looking rifles, though:bthumb:
