Has anyone ever used 22 BB Caps?

When I received my first gun in the late1960's my dad purchased some BB caps in the hope that I could use my gun like my BB gun and safely carry it around in the woods near our house (in the city). It turned out that they were much more powerful than he had anticipated, they could easily penetrate 1 or 2 pieces of 3/4 inch plywood, and were firecracker loud. That ended any hope of my using my new gun unsupervised. :( Does anyone else have any experience with those BB caps, and does anyone know if any companies still produce them?

CCI makes CB shorts that are pretty quiet outdoors. I buy then for my Henry lever and it reminds me of my RedRyder days.

A story: When I was young I lived in a small mobile home/trailer and bought some 22ammo that had pictures of popcorn on the ad implying that they were as quiet as popcorn popping. Good for indoors no earmuffs right? Nope!

Yeah, when we test fired the gun in the garage on Christmas day into that plywood it was painfully loud!!!!

When I was a kid back in the 60's we shot thousands of BB caps and CB caps, mostly in our basement. My dad built a big backstop with wood front and back and gravel in the middle. The only problem was that after the wood got shot up the gravel would run out, and if you didn't keep throwing it back in the top, pretty soon you were just shooting at 2 sheets of plywood. I was in the old house a few years ago. Everything has totally changed, but that area of the foundation is still covered with pings from the 22's. We never wore hearing protection, and we'd shoot a few hundred rounds every Sunday. Surprisingly my hearing is OK.

I have had a couple tins of them,,,

The negative is they leave deposits at the end of the brass,,,,
much closer to the breech of the barrel.

When you fire a LR after,,, the brass can get "locked" into the chamber,, right on the deposit..

So,, plan on cleaning after the BB's,,, before LR's,,,,

Aguila" Colibri" is similar ammo, without powder. Only the primer propels the bullet.

It's been a long time since I used them. But I believe the brass is the same length as a .22 short case.

Tried shooting them indoors years ago. Didn't work for me, as the fumes generated by just the ignited primers. Gave me splitting headaches.

The Aguila Super Colibri, ammo is different. In that their is a very small amount of powder in the case. Giving slightly higher velocity.

Just for reference, I found a app that measures loudness. Out of a Mossy 44US w/ 26" barrel CCI Quiet and CCI CB Shorts rated at 92 and 93 decibels. Almost hearing safe. Unfortunately, my only buddy with a suppressor only has it on his M16 9mm upper, so I can't compare these quiet rounds with a suppressed rifle...

Cheaper Than Dirt has them for $35/100 buy WHY? CCI CB longs (wont erode nor fill chamber with crap) but have to jump the gap to engage rifling...29 gn for about 710 ft/sec. A better choice is the newer CCI Quiet .22LR 40 gn at 710 ft/sec and much more accurate. Cost? $3.5/50 ONE FIFTH as much. I just bought a brick because my ballistics testing for a book I am writing on .22LR ballistics showed they were quiet, accurate and effective. (in my CZ 452 600mm and 725mm barrels) hint that is 23.6" and 28.6" in Protestant measurement! BB Caps are a good choice for bouncing of raccoon hides and CCI Quiet kills them great with behind the shoulder shot.

WARNING all super sub sonic rounds can easily freeze in barrel and cause a bulge if you do not notice!

Back in the late 1950s when I was a kid, I'd use BB caps for tree squirrel hunting. The trajectory wasn't great, so I'd have to get as close as possible before pulling the trigger. The ones that I used had an acorn on the tin and the projectile was round like a small muzzleloader ball with no powder, just the primer providing the energy for the round. The BB caps, as I remember, were quieter than the CB caps. I felt comfortable using the CB caps out to 20 yards with head shots on squirrels.

Well here's my $.02 for what it's worth. I like both but tend to lean towards CB longs so as not to foul the chamber. Although I have found that the RWS (ACORN) CB caps appear to make quicker kills on rabbits. CB shorts and longs are the quieter and more consistant.
