Get existing threaded or buy a threaded barrel?

For something like a Mark III 22/45 Target, I'm curious about what it would take to add a compensator or suppressor. Would a person be better off buying a threaded barrel or having a gunsmith thread an existing barrel? If the cost difference is great then what are the pros and cons of each choice? If the better solution is to get a new barrel then what's a trustworthy source?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Yeah, from what I've been able to find it looks like aftermarket barrels cost significantly more than threading. One thing that got me wondering was that it seems barrel ornaments screw on such that when they are fully on then the top of the ornament is pretty much exactly at the top of the barrel. This would be important for a compensator that has a true top and bottom positioning need. Therefore where the threading ends must be fairly critical. If this is correct then how would one go about finding a reliable service to do it correctly?

Thanks again,
Andrew

In regards to the suppressor baffles needing to be positioned vertically (assuming that's what you mean)... I wouldn't think that it would matter, but then I'm no expert on the subject.

As to who to get to do the work... there are some companies listed in a sticky in the NFA forum. You might also copy this thread to that forum (with the thread tools) and see if you get some more answers.

I have seen 22/45 LITE uppers for sale for $150- $185. You can have your existing upper threaded for $145. Jim Pixley does excellent work, as do others, but I trust Jims work. I have had several threading jobs done by him, and every one has been perfect. Its really your choice, but for a quality job, figure at least $100+
More than that if you have to ship. Either an FFL fee or 2d Day air two ways, which ain't cheap. If you are an FFL 01, then never mind.
