Front sight height....?

I need to know how to measure a front post type sight for height? OK, here's the story....

Over the last couple months I've been taking three or four rifles a week to the range and pretty much trying every ammo I have access to and trying to set each rifle to 'zero' at 25 yards. I've drifted front sights, rear sights, moved elevators back and forth, and even removed them to try to get the sight picture to be the same on most of the rifles. Most of the rifles require that I remove the elevator completely, and some that I place a heavy rubber band across the rear sight to even get close to 'zero'. I would like to be able to use the bead at the top of the sights over the center of the bull, not below it. I want to replace the front sights so that I have some adjustability to the POI.

Do I measure the dovetail base as well? Or leave it off the measurement?

Sights are measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight. Drift the sight out and put your calipers over the outside. The exception being a globe sight which is measured either to the top of the post (would be just like a regular post or bead sight), or the center of the aperture insert.
Brownells have a large assortment of front dovetail sights.

I haven't been well this week so maybe I have too much time to spend on the computer :) . Good reference books help also. You'd be surprised what you learn from a Brownell's catalog (how to measure for sight height for example).
If you folks don't have one, get one.
Also, if you're into Remingtons, get one of John and Roy's books.

Thanks for the answers guys. I still have lots of questions though....

I went to e-gun and found all of the Lyman replacement sights that they had listed. Looks like for my 5teens the original sight is a #82550AJ or a 3/8" dovetail front sight with a 1/16" diameter gold bead, 0.360" high. Now I'm a little worried, My model 33 takes a #82550AR, and my model 34 takes a #82550G.....get the picture.

Are they all the same sight? Do I still need to worry about the letters after the number?

All I want to do is pick up a couple sights that are say, 1/16" taller, and a couple that are 1/8" taller.

I noted that Midway also has the 'ivory' bead sights, but nobody seems to carry the original silver bead sights. I also noted that Midway doesn't use letters after the part number for specific model usage. Also about $2 cheaper per sight!!!

Are the 'ivory' bead sights better than the gold bead sights? Most of my shooting is at paper, old style NRA type targets.

I have a couple 'old ivory sights' with the real deal beads, and I can't really tell the difference vs gold or silver bead sights.

Thanks again....

I'm going to take a wild guess here for what it's worth, and maybe John with his knowledge of how Remington worked, can add some information.
Most companies probably did not make their own sights, even though they have that companies part # on them (or in the parts book). Sight manufacturers like Lyman, Marbles, Redfield, etc. probably made almost all the sights for all companies including Remington. This would be especially true for the more common interchangable sights. A rear sight like the screw on sight Remington used on their 510 series and earlier are probably an exception.
That said, my guess is that different companies at different times had the contract to make the front sights for 33, 34, 510/11/12, and others... this might be where the differing suffixes (G, AR, AJ) come from. They are all shown as the Remington #31 front sight and are interchangable but may have been made for Remington by more than one sight manufacturer. They should be .298" above the barrel and .360" overall height (to bottom of the dovetail). Does this make any sense at all? I'm just speculating here on parts of this, and since John has spent time at Remington and seen how they operated, maybe he knows how they worked with "purchased parts" (that's what we called them where I worked).

The internal Remington memos at the factory (Ilion) don't often discuss the makers of the various sights.

From here on I am talking from memory (dangerous thing) 'cause I have a busy day... Anyway, I believe the Point Crometer peep sight was made by Remington. All of the other peeps were made by Lyman, Marbles, etc. and clearly identified as such in their catalogs. Many of the regular sights were sub-contracted. I don't know if I have any info on the maker of the very common sight used on the 500 series and nearly all of the Rem 22s made in the 30s, 40s & 50s???

There was also a patent discussion with Lyman on one of the sights. That one must have been made by Remington.

There were two slightly different rear sights used on the M/33 & M/34. They are shown on page 186 of the book. I don't know if Remington made them or not.

The replacement sights on both e-gun and Midway are listed as Lyman sights.

I guess what I want to Know is there a difference, other than to designate the rifle make and model, between a Lyman #3 sight with a sufix AJ and a Lyman #3 sight with a sufix AR?

Both sights have the same dimentions as near as I can tell and have the same gold bead 1/16" in diameter.

And just so you guys know, it amazes me at the wealth of knowledge contained in one small place on the vast internet with so many people willing to help and share!!!!

Thank you

David

Wish I could help you more on the difference between the suffix to the numbers. I think your best bet might be to call Brownell's and ask for their "Tech Support"... the sales people are great for filling orders, but can't help much if you're not sure what part # you need. Their tech people should be able to give you the correct sight for your rifles with the added height you require.

grandparem,

I truely appreciate the effort to answer my questions and attempts to answer them to the best of your ability. I think I'm going to just get a couple of the height I think will work and try them out. If they work, then I'll pick up a couple more.

thanks again. :bthumb:
