My grandfather had a 1950s K-22 that my dad now has. Coming to visit for Christmas and he asked if he should bring S/W M&P 9mm...told him yes and to bring the K-22 so I could keep it protected in my safe. We'll see how it goes.
Those are beautiful grips, I like Magnas too, but I don’t like smooth grips. I’ve got several of each model in Ks & N Frames and I shot Magna grips one hand on Ks, Ns mostly Targets and shot two hand.
S&W has not made recessed cylinders for many years unless possibly on special guns from their performance center. I have a few of their P&R models along with a model 41 which I really like.
This is true and was determined to be unnecessary for the centerfire magnum revolvers which discontinued the recessed chambers after 1981, Non magnum caliber chambers were never counterbored (recessed). The rimfire revolver cylinders are still counter bored as it is deemed necessary to support and protect the primer loaded rims of the cartridges.
I do believe that S&W still counter bores all 22 revolvers, not 100% sure cause I got no interest in anything new and don’t keep up on them. The Bean Counters have ruined American Gun companies. All new stuff is junk, including S&Ws.
For those that like Target Stocks; here is the same K-22 with some. Both were made by John Culina. I tried the targets but the Magnas just feel batter on the K-Frame. Especially with a grip adaptor.
Walnut Targets by Culina
These are Lignum Vitae by Culina, one of the hardest known woods.
I so like both the looks and feel of the S&W Targets that I have them on all my K and N square-butt frames.
For K-frame round butt, I have several different grips that I like--it almost seems as if there are no bad choices here. My favorite would probably be the Pachmayr Compac Professionals. But a simple Tyler T-Grip adapter feels almost as good and adds nothing in weight or bulk. I have a Model 19 2.5" set up this way.
Those are very nice K-22s.
I have one made in 1948 that is NIB. You can see the minor flaws from being hand made, if you look close enough. They are still works of art. It is hard to beat CNC machining. I wish I had a set of Ropers for it.
OP, that is one fantastic K-22 and those grips are beautiful. I inherited a 5-screw 1955 K-22 and it is a prize in my collection. No fine 22lr revolver ever made.
Beautiful guns and grips. I tried Culina grips once and was disappointed. In the picture they had nice color and beautiful grain. In the hand they looked and felt like cheap brown plastic. Yes, they were the same grips, but you needed a floodlight to see the grain. Everyone I showed them to asked my why I bought plastic grips for such a nice gun.
"S&W has not made recessed cylinders for many years unless possibly on special guns from their performance center." ???
My brand-new 317. Pretty sure all the rimfire revolvers are still recessed. Even when manufacturers do make them like they used to, they get no credit:
Yep! Teddy Bear Rat is correct. Rimfire guns need the case head support and have always been counterbored on S&W revolvers. S&W counterbored the chambers of their cylinders on the magnum centerfire revolvers until sometime in the 1980s.
