FN 502 owners, would you buy it again ? Inquiring old dude would love to know.

So far, it's been great.
Only about 300 rounds of various ammo I have on hand. It's been 100% with CCI MiniMags. I had a couple failures to go all the way into battery with SV at first but it's running those fine now too. Haven't received any extra mags yet and still waiting for the Holosun 407.
YMMV

Definitely. It's a fun little gun and I haven't had any problems after a brief break-in period. During the first 150 rounds, I had several failures to go into battery (nearly one per magazine). After that, High Velocity CCI Blazer has been flawless but CCI Standard Velocity has the occasional failure to strip the next round (maybe 2-4 times per 100 rounds), which I assume is from being under powered.

Just got mine about a week ago. 35 rounds through it so far, not many, but it’s 100% so far. Trigger is really nice. Feels solid and the fit and finish is nice. First thing I did was clean and lubricate it when I got it. Cycled the slide a lot to check for any roughness. It shoots really nice. Put a stainless guide rod in it yesterday and I like it over the plastic one, knowing the plastic one likely would have lasted a long time.

All I’ve run through it so far has been CCI standard and CCI sub sonic. All shots have been through a can. I’ve not shot it unsuppressed yet. Prime will be dropping off a Holosun 507 tomorrow and I’ll install that. This is certainly one of my favorite .22’s just for what it brings to the table. 15 round mags, threaded, cut for a red dot, and so far reliable. I’ve not had anything but 100% reliable functioning.

After the first 15 or so rounds I noticed what looked like wear happening on the right side of the barrel. Took it apart to see what may be rubbing. Noticed a little dang-near-microscopic let’s call it a burr at the edge of the barrel opening in the slide. Took a piece of 1000 grit, oiled it, wrapped it around a pen, and smoothed that little spot out. It was like a 10th of a millimeter. Subsequent shots the grease I applied to the barrel didn’t get touched. Accuracy is very good, I’m sure I’m going to have a lot of fun with this little gun. I’d been waiting for it a long time and for the prices to start coming down. Paid $539. To answer the original question…yes, and I’ll probably buy another one in FDE to have both colors.

100 more rounds today to sight in and play with the 507k X2 that I mounted the night before. Experienced some of the same issues I read about in prior posts. I had the failure of the slide to go all the way forward when stripping the first round off the top and a few times it would eject but not chamber a new round. These things seemed to only happen on the first and second round from a fresh mag.

Haven’t tried any high velocity yet, all my playing has been shooting suppressed with CCI standard velocity. Overall very pleased with this pistol and I think the bugs will work out after a few more hundred rounds. First time shooting with a slide mounted miniature red dot and I like that a lot too.

I hope someone makes a metal trigger with a short reset soon, I’ll jump all over that.

Try to keep the breech block as clean and smooth as you can. You will see a difference. The slide will move more freely. Perhaps that will help.
You can see the stain on mine. I use a piece of 1200 wet dry to polish smooth to the touch.

I picked one of these up today at our local Scheels. It's the 502 Tacticle "black" version. The display model had a price of $550, but the one they brought out of the back had a tag inside the box of $520 so with my veterans discount I ended up paying $494. I added a HoloSun HS407C X2 Reflex Sight as I wanted a setup for practice and this comes close to my SA XDM Custom in 40 S&W. So now I own ( 2 ) polymer hand guns. Maybe with some practice on the 502 I will shoot my "other" polymer pistol more often. :(

I like the single action trigger & hammer setup which has the best out of the box trigger I have ever felt on any 22 polymer. It measured right at 3.5 lbs for (5) trigger pulls. The heavy mushy striker fired setup is what always kept me from getting any option in the past . . . so we will see how it performs on the range. You get both a 10 & 15 round mag and it has a reasonable feel in the hand, no additional back straps, and it has a nice plastic case. It cycled 10 rounds manually from both magazines . . . when you didn't baby the slide. We will see if I like the HoloSun but probably should have opted for the green dot version as I seem to see that color better.

Will update again after a range session.

I opened a case with FN and received an email that stated that I should remove anything I may have installed, package the firearm, then ship it back to them, and to be sure to insure it as I would be responsible for any damage during shipping. I responded to that email stating I didn't think I should have to pay for shipping and insurance on a new product recall.

Bottom line . . . After you open your case for the recall . . . Call and they will send you the RA shipping label to sent it in for repair.

I finally got my FN 502 back from FN's Customer Service for the recall - 2 months to turn that around. I'm not so critical about the turn-around time as I'm sure they are busy, but absolutely no interaction from them and no updates to my requests within the issue. The good news is that I can finally get the 502 to the range and hopefully have some fun. 👍 During the 2-month wait . . . I did get a chance to handle both the Tauras TX22 Competition and the Sig P322 ( both seem to be getting great reviews ). Just based on my handling and inspection - I would place the FN 502 over both based on how it fits in my hand and the feel of the trigger as in IMHO the trigger is clearly better on the FN 502 with the single action and exposed trigger design. Initially, I thought the barrel was fixed or pinned in place on the 502 however, that is not the case. Also after remounting my HoloSun 407 HS407C X2 Reflex Sight I found the provided screws for that base to be just a tad too long as it left the HS407C Sight ever so slightly loose on the slide. I resolved that issue with a small file and now it fits snug as a bug in a rug. ;)

I have lots of uses planned for this polymer plinker so we will see how it performs at the range initially for me . . . then on to other family members.

Updating this slightly aging thread. Still loving my 502, it’s my favorite 22LR pistol and loving it more today after doing a little work on it. It would fail to go into battery when it got a little dirty and since it’s always shot suppressed it gets a little dirty fairly quickly. Whenever working the slide it always felt a little crunchy when the ramp on the slide engages with the trigger to cock it or slide on it if I’d work the slide with the hammer already cocked. Inspected it closely to see where the shiny wear areas were and that pointed me to the rough spots. Broke out my trigger stone and went to work. Wow what a difference. A 1/4” stone fits perfectly through the gap in the back of the slide and after 5-10 minutes I had it mirror smooth.
Now I’m sure this near-butter smoothness probably would have happened anyway with a few thousand shots but I feel like I got a new gun today because it’s so much better than before.

I appreciate you popping this to the top. I just realized my FN 502 falls within the recall serial numbers as I have one of the very low serials on this model.

Outside the recall, I have been loving this pistol. I run it almost exclusively with a Dead Air suppressor and I have not had any failures. I have a lot of Aguila subsonic and it runs accurate and without failures. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun pistol to shoot 22lr and especially if you want to run a suppressor.

I guess I will be contacting FN now on the recall...Hoping it won't take two months.

After seeing these posts I’ll probably send mine in too and hope to get a couple new mags out of the deal. I almost hate the idea of getting a replacement gun because this one works so good. What I’ve learned from shooting mine is it likes light oil. I’d lubed mine up with Slide Glide Lite, not a lot, but it was enough to slow things down enough that it was failing to go into battery and it wasn’t cycling consistently. I only had a really light film on but once I wiped it off and used some light oil things got way better. After my stone work it’s a completely new gun.

Thanks for the heads up on the recall. I never knew and I have a very early one. Serial is in the 2000s. I just entered a case and waiting to hear from them.

But as to the original post, I do love it. For optic ready 22s, I have the 502, 2 Sig P322s and 2 Taurus TX22 Comps SRCs. I put a vortex viper on my 502 and have had zero issues with it. Thats why I am hesitant on sending mine back in. Not only because I have had zero issues, but because I bought the FDE Viper and would be mad if they sent me a black one back.

FN 502 owners, would you buy it again ? Inquiring old dude would love to know. [/QUOTE I don’t know right now, ran with no malfunctions with about 150 rounds of CCI mini mags, both HP and solid point (36 & 40 grain). However, when trying to mount Holosun on the new 502 noted only one (1) rubber O ring present under the site. They don’t seem to offer part on their website. Been us to HK and they run out of products at times, but they do seem to list all parts/products. Wondering if FN is ready for the American Market. 1) someone left out a part during production; 2) can’t seem to find the part for ordering on a Sunday morning. But 3) the firearm shot well without any problems.

Just stumbled onto this thread...
Yes I'd buy one again! I got mine back in November of 2022 and have about 500+ rounds through it so far and I've finally got it sorted out. I do have one issue and I thought I'd ask here about it.
While shooting it, I inadvertently press down on the right side of the mag release, dropping the mag without wanting to. My right hand hold seems to hit the release without me even feeling that I had done that.
My questions- Has this happened to anyone else? Short of shaving this down, is there a replacement that removes the ambi feature, (makes it for right or left handers)?

Update on my mag release issue. My son replaced the little spring that was in the release assembly with a stouter spring from an AR bolt release. He cut it down so it would compress as it needs to. So far I think the increased tension will alleviate my issue. We'll see with more range time.

I appreciate everyone's info and opinions on the 502. I read this post, and others, before I I just got the FN502 tactical -my 1st rimfire handgun. I like the feel of the gun and the trigger isn't bad. I have about 150 rounds of 5 types of ammo through it. I took it right out of the case and fired 100 rounds and had a few FTE and FTF. It wasn't too bad and I've read the 502 can have a long break-in period (and 22lr ammo is inconsistent relative to center fire ammo). The installed optics plate screws came loose, just like I read in other people's reviews. So far these are all minor issues that will hopefully resolve with simple attention.

I had 2 more concerning issues. First, I had 2 rounds from 2 different brands where the brass case ruptured where the base of the brass and primer meet. The bullet was fired, although I'm not sure at what velocity or accuracy since my attention was to the little bit of powder randomly spraying my face. The brass case wasn't ejected due to being deformed and required a rod to push it out. I took the 502 home and thorough cleaned it. I then put another 50 rounds through it without any rupture incidents (these were all aquila and CCI standard velocity (I did have 1 FTF)).

I didn't continue shooting because the gun shoots unacceptably high (about 4.5 inch high) and there isn't a way to adjust the suppressor height sights that came with the 502. The image below is me aiming at the bottom of the target to get the hits near center at 12 yds using those 2 types of ammo.

It seems unacceptable to me at the FN 502's price point that I need to buy a new sight(s) just so the gun shoots close to POA. I haven't HAD to do this with any of my other handguns. Should this gun go back to FN for them to make sure the gun is properly sighted in? Maybe it's a moot point. I'll probably put another 100 rounds or so through it and if I get additional shell ruptures then the gun is definitely going back to FN.

You know Muddzy I had forgotten how bad the FN's low budget sights were. I also experienced what you are experiencing. I recall thinking that they were a huge let down for such a nice pistol...
Of course, that all changed after I installed the red dot, which I think this gun really, really needs! It shoots and handles really nice now. Still one of my favorites to shoot.

I would buy another one. Of all the .22 pistols I have, I shoot this one more than the others. I got mine after already having the Sig 322, Taurus TX 22 competition and standard, Buckmark, Ruger 22/45, and a Keltec cp33.

As stated above, this gun is made to run with a dot of some sort. Holosun rides on mine. I have the green version and wish I had gone for the red one like the others I have, but this one was the only color the LGS had that day.

I had issues out of the box with the front sight falling out while shooting, and the 10 rd mag wouldnt always stay in the gun while shooting. FN rectified the situation quickly, and I have had no further issues with the gun. I have about 700 rounds through mine. None suppressed, but Im hoping to have that option soon.

I need to check the SN, as I was unaware of the safety recall.

Would I buy it again? I absolutely would. Suppressed or not, it eats everything I feed it. Only time I have issues with it is when it gets too dirty after a lot of suppressed shooting, but even then, take the slide off and give it a quick wipe down and some fresh lube and it's right back in business. I've got a Swampfox Sentinel green dot on mine and it is so much fun to shoot.

Great looking set up MoGG! 👍🏽

YES I would also buy again. I also HAD to put a red dot on it too but fortunately I can co witness.

A couple of things you should be aware of.
Shooting suppressed the glass gets real dirty even after the first few shots.
The slide will wear at the locking notch if you use the slide release to charge the weapon too much. So sling shot it.
I like the fact that it has STEEL mags too!

I cannot recommend the fn502 and definitely would not buy it again because of its many well-known flaws.

Because I am stuck with it, I have attempted to make it shootable by replacing the plastic front site with the correct height metal one. Now, when it does decide to shoot, it shoots point of aim with the irons, and co-witnesses very well through the RDS.

The recoil spring on mine, like most others is very weak, causing the slide to frequently not return to full battery with the next loaded round from the magazine.

I had previously experienced some of this but thought it might be because I was shooting suppressed Low to Standard velocity ammo. So, I tested it un-suppressed with higher velocity ammo. Well, unfortunately this problem has persisted with at least one failure to feed in every magazine.

After more research, I ordered a stiffer recoil spring and stainless guide rod from a company called Taylor Tactical. We'll see if these parts correct this problem.

I’m not sure what to do yet about the way too frequent light primer strikes. I will probably replace the firing pin spring with something a little stiffer if the stronger guide rod spring doesn’t correct it.

So now I am going to give the same advice I would give to a best friend. Don't buy one of these. Save yourself the aggravation and extra expense and just buy something like a Ruger MK IV pistol instead. Mine runs flawlessly both suppressed and un-suppressed and it is extremely accurate.
