Federal Lightning 40 grain 22LR: good stuff?

Stopped at my local Walmart last night & was shocked to see them just starting to open the boxes of 22LR. They received:

Federal Lightning 40 grain 500/BX @ $14.70
Federal Match 40 grain 300-350/BX @ $13.97
CCI Mini Mags 36gr HP and 40gr RN 100/BX @ $6.77

I grabbed 3 of the Lightning ( daily limit ) but have never fired it. I've always purchased copper plated. Any issues shooting the lead?

It's neat that you happened to be there when they unloaded that.

Around here, we've got two Wal Marts. One is in the Denver district and the other one is in the Salt Lake City district. So you can drive across town and find fairly different store stock and even policies.

Anyhow, on the east side, they used to sell the Fed 510B in bricks of 500 rounds as well as in boxes of 50. For years the price was $1.47 per box of 50, or 14.70 for a brick. Then they raised their price to, I believe, $1.97 per box of 50.

On the west side, they NEVER sold the 510B by the brick. They always broke the bricks down and sold it by the box. But the pricing was the same, and the price went up at the same time in both stores. (That was a couple of years ago). I stopped buying the 510B when the price went up. Why pay $20 a brick for the 510B at WM when I could (at that time) get Blazers at Sportsman's Warehouse for $16 per brick, and I didn't have to wait for the keymaster nor be limited to three boxes. If you wanted to fill up a shopping cart, nobody cared.

Ahhh. The good old days.:D

So when the WMs here had the six box limit a few years ago, you could walk into the east side store, and if they actually had 510B in stock, you could theoretically have bought 6 bricks of the stuff in one visit.

On the west side, you'd have been limited to six 50-round boxes simply because they always insisted on taking the bricks apart. I always thought that was kind of odd.

Many people have excellent luck with the 510B. I have had OK luck with it from most guns, but it doesn't cycle some semi-auto pistols well in my experience.

If you found 510B for $14.70 per brick, and were allowed to buy three bricks, that was an excellent score, in my opinion. That's what I like to see! :bthumb:

So true. I have 4 or 5 Walmarts within an 5 mile radius of my house. Two of them do not carry Lightning at all. One breaks the bricks down to individual 50 round boxes. The other two stock both boxes and bricks.

I was lucky to find several bricks at both stores that carry them back in December a couple weeks before Christmas. What was cool is that the first ones I bought rang up at the $14.70 price, eventhough the individual boxes were priced at $1.79. When I bought them at the second Walmart, the brick rang up at $17.90, but I showed them the receipt that I had stuck in my wallet from the first store... and they matched it. :D

Haven't seen any more Lightning in stock since that day. :(

I bought a ton of this stuff over the last two years @ $1.79 and $1.99 / 50.

My CZ special loves it.

My wife complained all the time I was buying it asking why I needed more!!

Now we know........and prices NEVER go down.

Got a couple of boxes of the Fed. Lightning/511b this morning at Walmart. I think I tried it years ago and it was OK for plinking and hunting at 25-30yds. Nothing spectacular but for $2.19/50 it's worth it and better than most Remington .22.

I called WM first this morning around 9am and the SG guy says we "only" have the 50rd boxes of Fed. Lighting. He said no rush I got a few bricks of the stuff. We won't run out for a while. So I took my time and got there about 25min. later instead of the 5-10min. norm that it takes me to get there. When I got there to my surprise the same guy I spoke to on the phone was selling boxes of Federal AutoMatch to 2 other guys!! Of course the guy ahead of me bought the last box.. :banghead3
I asked him why he didn't tell me on the phone he had Automatch? He said "oh I didn't see them when you called". Yeah right. He stocked the shelves that morning. Getting sick of these WM employees hidding the good stuff. That's why he told me to take my time. He had people (his buddies) coming in to get it. I think it's time for another talk with the Store Manager.

LOL. Yes, I probably did get it there last year. I think the price was about $1.49 for 50 on sale at the time. Sorry, but they have no .22 ammo of any kind except maybe a box of two of shotshells. The .22 mag lasted for a while and the .17 HMR for a bit longer but now even that is gone. Kinda sad to see once full ammo shelves basically bare. Not as barren looking as the shelves at Dick's in Burnsville yesterday. But at least they had some .17 left.

The Lightning shoots fine in most of my rifles but the old Marlin doesn't like it for some reason. But it's a finicky eater anyway. If a truckload of ammo comes in, I'll let you know. But don't hold your breath waiting for it to arrive. ;)

It always ran great in my first two SuperStock 10/22s and still does in my second two but 3 summers ago it just stopped running my first two rifles. Constant jams.

I waited about 3 months and bought some more and that and all since then have shot great. It was just that one lot was awful and just in my 10/22s. My pistol above and my T/C Classic still ran fine on it but for just a few months it was not the thing for my Ruger Rifles.

The last tme I went to CA to go camping and shooting with my friends (3 years ago or so) the old guy at the ammo counter was really grumpy. He had just stocked the shelves. We were going for a week and I try to have 500 a day if possible but when I went in they did not have quite that and we don't shoot quite as much so I told the guy "I will take 40 boxes of the Federal 510" Now he was really grumpy. As he counted out 40 boxes he said something about no consideration because he had just stocked the last of it he had.

After he counted out the 40 I looked and there was not a lot left and by now I was tired of being grumbled at for buying "his" ammo. So I asked what was left. He said "You only left 7 boxes".

I told him, "Let's make this easy on you I will just take all of them so get the other 7 as well.":rolleyes::D I bought 47 individual 50 round boxes!! Ended up shooting most of it too.

My Ruger KMK678GC loves the stuff. At least with the lots I had at the time it shot exactly as well as SK Pistol Match at about 1/5 to 1/4 the price at the time. Back around 2005 Academy was selling it for $6.50 a brick. I shot a lot of it. This is a 10 shot group shot from a rest @30 yards that measures almost right on 1/2" CTC:

Here is a target with a 10 shot SK Pistol Match shot from the same rest and measures .510 :)rolleyes:):

Why buy the "good stuff" when the cheap stuff shoots just as well? An awful lot of this stuff was shot from this pstol at 100 and 200 yards.

Remember that is from a rest under the barrel and my wrists were supported. I am not claiming any abundant skill on my part.

The one that scares me to post is that this pistol has shot 2" groups at one hundred yards.

Think about it though. 100 is 3.333 times as far as 30. So .500" X 3.333 is 1.666" so it should be able too if you can read the conditions well enough

When we first started posting less than 1" groups with our SuperStock 10/22s people called us liars and worse. Now in SuperStock we have about 10 rifles that have posted 3 out of 4 groups under one inch at 100 on the same target and others are trying it and finding out they can do it too with other kinds of rifles.

If a Contender can shoot 1" 100 yard groups I see no reason a good MKII can't shoot 2". The barrel and receiver are very stiff.

Like nemohunter and I have both said when it comes to rimfire accuracy these ARE the good old days. We remember when anything under 1" with a centerfire varmint rifle was a bragging group.

2" is still considered decent for a centerfire big game rifle but these pistols will do it:bthumb:

2" with a pistol @ 100 is phenomenal.

Speaking of 1" groups @ 100, if airgun PCP rifles can do it, I don't see why it's such a big deal for powder burners.

I am not a big target shooter and don't compete (yet). I am mostly a hunter, and only starting to get into punching paper a lot more. So I think if I can shoot 5-shot 1/2" groups all day long @ 50yds with my off-the-shelf Savage Mark II FVSR using good SV and Subsonic ammo (even my Marlin 60 sometimes with CCI Tactical and Win.Super-X HV) with my limited shooting skills and cheaper guns, getting 1" or sub-1" @ 100 with modified 10/22's should be attainable, and not a big surprise. Actually it's a fact as you stated.

Now if we can only do that in the brush when hunting with the wind blowing :)
