federal automatch

I recently purchased a Rem 572 and mounted a new scope. I scrubbed the bore good, and wanted to sight in, and season the barrel for one type of ammo. I chose automatch, cause I had a fair amount of that stuff, and got caught up in the word match in its name. 3 holes touching and 2 very high flyers at 50 yards seemed the norm. I guess I will scrub the barrel and trY something else. I was looking for consistent accuracy. Anybody have any accuracy with that ammo?

Maybe my standards of what is decent ammo are lower than some,,,
But I've always found Automatch to be decent plinking ammo,,,
It's about all I run in my CZ-512 Carbine.

I do get some flyers but hey,,,
That could easily be me.

What I don't get are the duds and failure to load/ejects other people complain about,,,
Last outing I ran just over 200 rounds with no problems.

If I'm chasing those teeny groups I use a CZ-457 bolt rifle,,,
And either CCI-SV or Remington milsurp,,,
That I got from CMA.

Just saying,,,

Why are inconsistent results from bulk cartridges,
by any manufacturer, a surprise? :cautious:

Dumped in a container, no protection from rough handling,
sold at a cost per cartridge well below that of competition grade ammo,
and the optimists think that it's going to give reliable trajectories? o_O

If it has the word "match" on it, it ain't. ;)

I occasionally shoot Federal Automatch from the bench out of both of my CZ 457 Varmint MTRs and it usually ties in 2nd place with CCI SV in 50 yard accuracy. Norma TAC-22 & MATCH-22 is my regular go to for accuracy of these 3 brands at just throwing lead down range. All are subject to flyers even when I do my part but Norma has had fewer than the others that I've experienced. Good luck and happy shooting.

As far as accuracy from the FAM... I found it to be no better or worse than any of the other non-match grade rimfire I tried and rejected for inaccuracy*. But after the ammo drought a few years ago I saw it for a good price (knowing nothing else about it) and bought a few 10k rounds of it. Maybe I hit the ammo lottery just right but mine has no failures of any sort. I use it mostly for Steel Challenge and if anything about it cost me any time it'd be gone in a heartbeat. What I have is accurate enough for squirrels. But match grade ammo? No. For that I have yet to buy really good ammo. I agree with those who wrote SK Standard + for practice and Rifle Match for when I want fewer flyers. But Standard + is surprisingly good. There is no magic, pay more and generally get more. Lot test the good stuff and get even more otherwise it's a roll of the dice. Are you feelin' lucky?

*A great rifle won't perform with lousy ammo and the best ammo won't make a rifle that can't shoot, perform.

Yes, but, I have a $99 Rossi bolt and groups from FAM were obviously ragged and larger than CCI-SV. Same results many months later with different lots on both ammo.
FAM, in my book, is fine for off-hand can killing. My Heritage Rough Rider revolver had a steady diet of FAM for a long long time after those comparisons w/o complaint.

Automatch got "match" in it's name 'cause someone in Federal's marketing department at the time it was intro'd had great idea. I hope he or she got a bonus.
Nothing wrong with it per se ... it just is what it is: A bulk-packaged, cheap plinker.
I don't buy it these days because .22lr prices are good right now and I see no need.
Best "bargain" round right now, IMO, is the Norma-Tac.
