Eley Tenex is the world’s most consistently accurate .22LR cartridge.

Eley ammo seems to be the staple for Olympic 50M rifle competition. Ever wonder why? Pity the poor sucker that believes they can get their hands on a box of Tenex and shoot like an Olympian. That said, my best friend and I have a couple of Tikka T1x rifles that are pretty much out of the box, and they both show a definite preference for Tenex and Match. I tried the better Eley ammo in my ABRA and MK II rifles and they just wouldn't shoot a decent group. These two have always shown a preference for Lapua ammo. YMMV

Been on the 22 competition game since 1970s.
Eley was king.
Then in 1980s Federal dominated
Then 1990s thru mid 2000s eley was back on top.
I dont know what it is here in USA about Eley, but in Europe the position and bench guys win with Eley.
And here in USA the best of best bench guys prefer Lapua, but, still some are winning with Eley.
It seems in NY rifles,
It's easier to find good lots of lapua, mayb 3 oura 5.
Eley it seems maybe 2 outa 10 lots that shows promise.
But a great lot is still a great lot

Well, I'll be the 'outlier' and say (IMO) there has never been better 22 LR match ammo than the Russian Olimp-R produced in the 1980's. If it could only be had today.
That said, in the St. Louis 22 RF benchrest (group shooting, and then BR 50) shooting endeavors in the late 1980's, I was in on beginning of the shift from Ten-X to Lapua Master as the 'go to' ammo for match wins.

In my experience, it varies and changes over time. When I first got into .22 benchrest about 25 years ago, Lapua and Federal Gold Medal Ultra Match were considered the most accurate rimfire ammo. I shot Lapua Master M and Midas M ammo back then. Then there was a change in Lapua's primer mix and Federal discontinued their UM. Eley upped their game with the EPS bullet profile and it (both Tenex & Match) and it became the best ammo for quite a while. Then Lapua upped their game, and now it is the IT ammo. I'm sure there is still plenty of excellent Eley ammo around. My guess is, you'll see plenty of it used in this year's Olympics, I'm sure.

I can only speak to the last 5 years and my own testing with Eley, Lapua, RWS, but of those three Eley (Match and Tenex) are consistently on the bottom with multiple match-grade .22's.

Eley was definitely at the top at one time, and I will continue to try it again sometimes, but for now they're a solid 3rd place and struggling to compete with SK most of the time.

With proper testing and evaluation, it's possible Lapua and/or RWS might outshine the Eley I've been using.
That said, I've got X funds and Y time. (I still work a long week.)
So, I run Eley Tenex and Match largely because (1) it does reasonably well from my CZ/Lilja, (2) price stays fairly close to constant and (3) restocking with a few bricks is easy enough.
I'm just a weekend warrior; gotta make compromises sometimes.

The reason is: worldwide more championships are won by shooters using Eley Tennex than any other ammo. Any other answer is personal opinion.

In the US, Lapua tends to be the preferred ammo. Some US manufactures chamber their barrels specifically for Lapua/SK. Similarly, some manufactures set their headspace for Lapua/SK (which prefers a wider headspace). Mass produced rifles in the US, tend to have headspace's on the loose end of the SAAMI specs, which is better suited for SK/Lapua ammunition.

My CZ preferred Eley round nose (not Tennex). Once that was determined, I adjusted the headspace for Eley (which prefers a tight headspace). I shoot Eley Club which is basically Tennex with a different bullet shape.

Skilled rifle builders can build a rifle to perform well with either.

The first statement is true historically, more championships have been won, but currently Lapua is doing better in ISSF events.

Secondly no, Club is not just round nosed Tenex. Club is made in different machinery, in much larger quantities so bullets with a batch may not all be made from the same lead, and the lubricant is different. That doesn't sound the same does it? Eley do make two round nosed Tenex: Tenex Pistol and Tenex Rapid Fire. These are not relabelled Club.
