Found a laminated stock for my Savage Mk II in the classifieds. The ad said good condition and the price was right. When it was delivered, it appears like the trigger guard and bottom metal inlets had been done with a Dremel. A hole had been drilled off centerline for the trigger guard wood screw.
The bottom metal will sit relatively flat. The trigger guard inlet is too uneven and shallow. When I hold down the action screw end of the trigger guard, the wood screw end is about .200" from the bottom of the inlet.
I'm currently discussing with the seller. Asked him to refund all my money and I'd send it back, or refund half my money and I'd keep it as a project.
I don't have access to a mill, but can use a friend's drill press. The first thing I'd do is drill out the off center hole and plug it with a 1/4" dowel. Then use an endmill to make flats to depth on each end of the trigger guard and redrill that hole. Then relieve the rest of the trigger guard inlet below those flats with a Dremel and bed the trigger guard to the stock.
The bottom metal may not need much more than bedding to the stock.
Does this sound like a valid plan?
** Tried adding photos, but couldn't post with them in the message. Edit: Was able to post pics one at a time below.
Thanks in advance,
Dana
