CZ 457 Varmint vs. CZ 457 Varmint MTR. 20” barrel

Looking at the CZ website, the only difference in the CZ 457 Varmint and the CZ 457 Varmint MTR is the match chamber in the latter? Is this correct. It appears they both have the 20 inch barrel. I want to purchase one or the other and put in a KRG Bravo chassis. I would then attempt to sell the wood stock. I could save 200 bucks roughly by purchasing the non MTR version (match chamber). Looking back through several threads, it appears the non MTR is no less accurate. I will spend the extra 200 if I can be convinced the match chamber is worth it. Opinions are valued. Thank You!!

Having 2 Varmint MTR's I'd sway you that way. You would not be restricted to using only match ammo where mine shine with RWS R50 but both shoot very, and I mean very respectable groups with Norma Tac-22, CCI SV as well as Federal Automatch. Selling the Varmint MTR stock would not be hard at all as they are desirable, I'd like to have another one myself.

I own both.. i think the mtr might, might be a bit more accurate.. but they are both in original stocks. I would say luck of the draw on your barrel plays as much as the match chamber

i.e. if you got a great (lucky) barrel on the Varmint and an Average barrel on the MTR...IMHO you will be fine....especially because of your stock swap out

My two cents..

Also the Varmint trigger shoe is different than the MTR...if I remember correctly...Varmints is wider vs MTR

If your going to swap the stock then it likely doesn't matter much. Cost wise, the end cost will be close. Either stock can be resold to help recoup costs towards the Bravo (which should be at a hefty sale price for Black Friday, BTW). Based on my experience, you could resell a clean Varmint or Varmint MTR stock for $175 and $275 respectively. Also, If the standard barrel doesn't shoot to expectations, then that one can be sold for $150 or so and a new MTR barrel be had for $300 +/-. The question is: Will you lose sleep at night wondering if the MTR barrel is better?

If you're going to shoot a sport that does not require you to have factory offerings, I would go with the Varmint. As already mentioned, you would save some money and it would not be as finaki with some ammunition.

There are quite a few shooters in ARA that uses the At-One in Factory Class. These rifles do not come with a match chamber and many of the shooters are shooting in the high 2400's and many have shot 2500.

However, I'm not that good of a shot and need all the help I can get and I chose the MTR.

I bought the 457 Varmint (wood) with zero regrets. I`ll put mine up against any factory oem MTR out there for accuracy.
Mine wont win the wood lottery, but the barrel sure would. My 457V is so accurate that its very boring to shoot.

If you think you need to spend the extra money for the MTR, its your money that is buying it, have at it.
For me personally, i wanted a 22lr that wouldn`t be finicky with ammo. And that`s what i got, with my 457 Varmint (wood).

Re-read post #4, great advice!

Same barrel, built with the same CIP standard (tighter than a SAAMI) chamber. Different roll stamp; MTRs are marked CZUSA, Varmint marked CZUB. MTR has the North American standard thread on the muzzle; 1/2-28, Varmint has the European Std of 1/2-20. My Varmint has a tighter chamber and shorter head space than any of the MTRs I have ran into. I feel bad for the guy that sold it to me, it was a brand new take off for a build, and he did not put a single round through it before he changed it out.

Barrels are always a bit of a lottery, but I won this one. :)

Wonder why they discontinued the MTR model? Well, now a search says both have been discontinued and several other models all in 2021.
I dont know what you are looking at, but the MTR and Varmint are not discontinued.

Again , I don’t think this is correct, the Match Chamber is not the same as in the Varmint, and the euro thread is only on excess euro inventory being dumped in North amrica.

No, if they were for the European market, they would have European markings roll stamped into the barrels. Different models. An no, not discontinued, just not coming in in the numbers that they were.

Here is CZ USA's website: Rifles - CZ-USA It is clear it is NOT discontinued...and can be found for sale on numerous websites. I bought one just this month.
At the local match i shoot they dont allow the mtr in production class, you have to shoot in unlimited. So if you are going to use it at certain events you might wanna check the rules.
If your local match was an approved ARA event, the match director was wrong. Here is the type of MTR that is not allowed.

I’ve shot a MTR in factory and have been lead to believe it’s the VPC-MTR that’s not allowed but, the regular MTR is.
Correct!

Correct!
It's not an ARA event, no one said it was. Match directors at private clubs can setup the match rules however they want.

And one additional note is that ARA has a dollar limit on Factory Class rifles so before someone runs out to buy a CZ Manners MTR, here is the price tag:

Euro threading, and they all have the euro roll marks . If they had barrels just for Americans then they should take the darn serial # offthe barrel. Its not required, and causes issues.

As to them being the same chamber , i disagree.

As for discontinued , was responding to

As for less comming in, considering that there is a ground war 600 miles away , Id think theymight be having some supply chain problems.

As for Tarrifs, yep, they’re gonna have to move production here if the want to continue selling.

Sure, what ever you say.

Wave the flag, buy your barrel stamped CZUSA and pay $200 USD more for it. That helps keep the price down for those of who know. LOL

Disagree all you like, there are lots of MTR barrels being replaced and sold as well. Buy CZ, play the barrel lottery; you are more likely to win with CZ, Anschutz or Tika than you are with Savage, Winchester or Remington. Because of the tight CIP European standards.
