CZ 457 Varmint Accuracy

Finally got to the range this afternoon with the new CZ 457 Varmint. Nice tight group at 25 yards on initial scope sight in. Moved to 50 yards. Things changed drastically. Not consistent with pretty much any ammo I tried in it. Not even Eley TenX or Eley Match. Too many flyers to make a reliable ARA Factory Class competitor. Even tried adjusting the action bolts to try and find the right torque. So.....has anyone run into this with a CZ 457 Varmint? I have an Anchutz 1710 that shots great. So....I kind of know what an accurate rifle is all about. I was anticipating at a minimum 1/2" group at 50 and expecting 1/4" groups. So.......pretty disappointed on my first outing with this rifle.

Not the same price tag, at the price of the cz little tweak are needed to get full potential, couple hundred box will get a yodave spring and the gun bedded, if they where in par with anschutz out of the box, anchutz would be bankrup……

To a degree on any mass produced production rifle accuracy is still a lot of hitting the barrel lottery.
Usually it seems there are a lot of CZ's as compared to many other common brands that land on the better side of the accuracy than those that do not.

But it is still an assembly line mass production rifle and all of them are not going to be tack drivers out of the box.

only have 1 Varmint but here is the spreadsheet on some of my ammo testing. Shot my first ARA factory 2500 with it last March. Got a pair of 452's and a MTR also, all seem to shoot pretty much the same. All 4 have scored 2400 to 2500 in competition.

I would call that lucky except at the ARA matches I attend the majority have CZ's winning the majority of the top ten spots with a few Bergarra B14's and the occasional Tikka. I joke they should rename the ARA Factory class the ARA CZ class

My 457 Varmint has been great. It's about 2 years old now.
It likes Lapua, SK, and Eley. It hates tac-22.
My other 2 457s shoot well too.
I get bummed out when others get a rifle that needs extra work of whatever. Especially when they are the minority, because there is so much positive support on CZ. Folks go in expecting similar results as others, then their bubble breaks.
Maybe it's QC at CZ or just the odds of buying a mass produced item.
We live in different times. Most every product out there seems to lower the bar as years pass.
I am a strong supporter of CZ firearms in general. Hopefully they start moving back to their roots as long as they don't price themselves out of their own game.

Here is one example of a 50yd 10 shot Eley Match group from my Varmint.
These things CAN shoot. I wish the best results for everyone.

I've got some bolt shims headed my way. Will tinker with the head spacing to try and make this rifle shoot. If I can't get it pretty quick, it's going down the road to be replaced with something else. One of my LGS has a CZ 457 Pro Varmint in stock. I assume it's legal for ARA Factory Class. Probable just another trip down the rabbit hole with hopefully better results.

Sorry you're having issues. I wouldn't change anything until you try some better ammo or at least some different lots of the ammo you've already tested

Unless your headspace is excessive (like really excessive) and you're getting ignition problems (light strikes) shimming the bolt is not going to help. It can actually cause other problems. Honestly, the whole bolt shim thing is snake oil and a waste of money. Maybe as a last ditch effort to get an old rifle shooting again but not in a brand new rifle

Well.....my scope is a brand new Sightron SIII 45x45 with Area 419 rail and Area 419 match rings. All torqued to spec. My plan is to check the barrel set screws for proper torque and double check everything else concerning the scope and rings. If none of that is the culprit, I'm searching for another rifle. The rabbit hole keeps getting deeper and deeper. 🐰

I have not read all of the comments, but here is what I sent to CZ yesterday. Except for an acknowledgment, I'm still waiting to hear back:
My [brand new] CZ457 American in 22LR shot amazingly well right out of the box. When I was satisfied with the accuracy, I removed the stock so that I could adjust the trigger pull. In removing the stock, I noticed that the connector bolts were not exactly loose, but they certainly were not tight. That seemed odd to me, so I looked through the owner's manual for a torque spec for the connector bolts. Not being able to find such a spec there, I went online where I found a CZ produced video stating that the that the connector bolts torque spec was 31 inch/pounds. I reassembled the rifle tightening the bolts to 31 inch/pounds with my "Fat Wrench" from Wheeler. When I resumed shooting at 100 yards with the same ammo as before, my impact moved at least 3 inches higher and about 1 inch to the left, and the group grew from about 1 inch to over 3 inches at 100 yards. Online research revealed to me that others had experienced this same thing and many offered suggestions regarding this anomaly. My solution, after much experimenting, was to tighten the connector bolts (rear bolt first) to 15 inch/pounds of torque. This seems pretty light to me, but the rifle started grouping again at about 1 moa. I dare not go any less on the torque out of fear the bolts might wiggle loose, but any tighter causes the group to begin to open up and the impact to shift. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can more securely tighten the connector bolts while still maintaining good accuracy? Thank you, Jim Brannon, Athol, Idaho, USA

IMPO these do well with 'Low' in-#s, I have my VMTR at 15-16 also. I've only had it out 3-4 times this Spring and all 'windy days' so I'm still not certain that a few more ip-s might help ? I had a Wheeler Fat but just got a Digital Chinesium Wrench to experiment with - same cost as Wheeler and 'more accurate' ? We'll see b4 I brag it up. I've got some 0.2s and .3s so far, but also some 0.6-7s sooo . . . ?

I tried a variety of ammo from SK including Standard Plus, Pistol Match and Rifle Match but the best groupings came from SK Semi Auto so I bought a couple of bricks of it on sale for $ 7.99 a box. I scored a 247 3X on the USBR Green Monster target at 25 yards with my CZ 457 Varmint so I know the gun has potential.

Eley just doesn't do as well in any format so far.

More ammo to test and I'll pick my standard loading.

Steven,

How many different lots of the ammo you mentioned did you test? SK Semi-Auto can do pretty good and you may have a good batch of it but I wouldn't bank on that being the best overall. Try some different lot number of SK Rifle Match. A good lot will be like shooting a decent lot of Center-X
