My Boyds Pro Varmint walnut stock arrived today. It came inletted for a 452 Varmint. I inletted for American's tang lug. Tomorrow I'll see how it goes at the range. I've been looking forward to trying this rifle with this stock as it has a wider forearm. I'm undecided about what scope will be more permanently with the rifle.

Your wish is my command.

For the tang lug inletting on this 452 Varmint Pro Varmint stock, I used a drill press. First a 1/8" guide hole was drilled through the wood screw hole at the back end of the trigger guard. Then a 5/16" hole was drilled for the rear action screw of the 452 American, using a Brad-Point bit. I didn't put it all the way through so that the guide hole could be used for the 5/8" hole for the tang lug drilled with a Forstner bit from the top side of the stock.

...And the barrel lug screw repair...
The barrel lug screw repair will be made some time in the future. It can be done relatively simply by cutting a plug from walnut with a plug cutter bit. A bit of refinishing follows.

How long did it take you to get it?
The stock arrived almost two months to the day since it was ordered.

Although yesterday, before the stock arrived, I had told my wife that I wouldn't go shooting a fourth time this week, I found that resistance was futile and took the rifle to the range this morning. I must say that this stock lends itself to shooting off a rest much better than the American stock. I was able to shoot eight out of ten five-shot groups that were under half-an-inch at 50 yards (actually closer to 60, but that's another story). That may not seem impressive to those who regularly shoot very well, but for me it was quite satisfying. I'm now giving serious thought to getting a Pro Varmint stock for my 453 Varmint. Although they are only available in black at this time, they can be had specifically made for that model.

A couple of casual observation for comment for consideration. Straighten me out if this is all off base. Maybe this stock is optimized for bipod & varmint mode as opposed to off the bags?

First is that a stock for the shooting range would better without sling studs to grab on the rests.

Second the bottom of the butt stock should be parallel to the bore. It is now ever so slightly angled.

Edit: My bad, it is called pro varmint - all is good them.

Thanks for the comments. I'll try to answer some of the questions.

My retired father is a carpenter with a workshop with tools for woodworking, with which I am comfortable. I am completely unfamiliar with metal work and have not even seen anyone drill or tap anything. I imagine CZ has a reason for the dovetail action lug. Inletting the stock was the only way for me.

Do you have to call boyd to get this order?

I have a CZ Varmint with thumbhole stock and the length of pull is to short for me. Not only that I just feel weird behind the rifle. My scope eye relief on my weaver tactical requires me to pull my head back to the end of the stock even with the DLP extended scope base which moves the scope forward.
I ordered online. Boyds offers LOP options.

Those Boyds walnut PV stocks look great, nice looking rig you have there! Any reason why you didn't get stippling? I got a couple laminate PV stocks with the stippling and I like it. I'm going to order some walnuts with it, I love the look of your rifle.
I think checkering was an option (I can't seem to get on Boyds site at the moment), but I wasn't sure how the stock would work out for me so I didn't add any options. The option I really liked was the adjustable comb.

Thanks for taking the time to take and post the pics. Looks nice and you're off to a good start with a nice clean job on the inletting you did for the rear action lug.

How tight a fit is the action? Do you have plans to bed it?

The fit was excellent. I didn't have to relieve any material, and the action fits without movement. I am thinking about bedding it; but since I have never done it myself I am hesitating. The one CZ I have that is bedded was done by dj and it shoots wonderfully. For now I think I will shoot it for a while and get to know the rifle with the new stock a little better. Perhaps when the snow flies I will try my hand at bedding as I have a few other rifles that might benefit. I have picked up all that is needed. I'd just like to see it done once.

If you do bed it, are you going to fill the barrel channel for cosmetic purposes?
There's a discussion going in another thread of mine on this stock where we talked about applying 2-3 layers of painters tape to the barrel, and bedding the barrel channel with light weight bedding compound like Acraglas, dyed brown to match the Walnut. If I get one (for my 452 SILHOUETTE), I will likely pillar bed the action with Decvon and then bed the barrel channel as I have described. I have Brownells dye for bedding compound...

Boyds site

Well, last week, I finally gave up on waiting for Boyd's to get back to me on my product information request for a left-hand inletted 452 stock for my LH American.

I went on Boyd's site Thursday afternoon to place the order. I started by looking up the Pro Varmint first; Then going through the ordering process.

The options selection had changed for the 452. Bam! There was the option for a Pro Varmint for a 452-2E with a LH Factory Barrel Channel. Man, what timing.

That morning I had given up and thought I would have to order A RH/Bull Barrel and modify it.

When I got on the site last Thursday afternoon to submit the order. The site was really acting up. I selected the options I wanted. But, the site kept crashing while I was setting up an account.

After messing with it for a while, I gave up. Then I checked my email again and saw Boyds had just sent out an email with a list of many more rifles they had added to their selection. That email must have crashed their site. Everyone was on it at the same time.

I finally got back on Boyds site again, just after supper.

Only part of my earlier order showed in my cart, so I had to go through selecting everything I wanted again, and delete the first item because it had no options.

My order included:

>Pro Varmint Cz? 452-2E American Short Action Clip Feed Left Hand Action Factory Barrel Channel Zz

I also selected:
>Pepper Laminate
>Adjustable Comb

Now, I don't have to worry about switching the RH to LH and will only have to float the barrel a little. Of course, there will be some pillar bedding in its future, and then a little this; and a little that.
