Counterfeit Leupold scopes

Yesterday I received 2 counterfeit Leupold branded scopes in the mail from a Craigslist add stating Leupold scope for sale which I paid for by USPMO.

After looking closely at the scopes something is wrong so I called Leupold and they asked for the serial numbers which I gave them and their Tech services confirmed my suspicion. "Counterfeit" I told them I purchased from a friend which was not honest.

I left a message for the seller to call me stating I had an issue with one of the scopes. Then I went on the net to find out more about this individual and saw another person with the same last name and the same address so I called and luckily got his Dad. I explained that I did not think his son was aware that he had knowingly sold counterfeit scopes and asked him to pass on this info and have him contact me. Which his son did later the same day. He'll send me a check today for what I paid.

He said in my first conversation with him prior to the purchase that a couple of buddies made a group buy from another party for a bunch of scopes. He's been using them and the excess is being sold. That's why they were priced low. So I bought two scopes.

I know he sold at least one more prior to me making contact with him to confront the counterfeit issue. At this point and time I'm not sure if he was aware of what he was selling or if he has more.

The bottom line is I want money back and I also don't want to see anyone else make a purchase. I think this product should removed from the mainstream.

And I'm talking about the buddy purchase. What are your thoughts on this?

I doubt that seller was unaware of them being counterfeit. I also doubt you will be getting a check. Your best bet is to file a complaint with the postal inspector. In the future be aware that there is NO WAY you are going to get a legit Leupold for the prices that the fakes sell for on eBay. Since Leupolds have a lifetime no questions asked warranty the are never sold at much of a discount even if they are used.

Think of all those sayings that have been true since time immemorial:

"If it looks too good to be true, it is."

"Caveat Emptor."

You didn't read the Sticky about counterfeit Leupold's, first mistake, you bought it on Craig's list, second mistake, you paid with a money order, third mistake.

You and your money are never to meet again.

I never buy electronics ,cameras or scopes from anybody but an authorized dealer as this is exactly what I would fear .You got real lucky getting your money back .If you see these scopes back for sale again that means the seller was aware they were counterfeit if not than I believe he didn't know.

There is a company in China that has taken the name Leupold. So the scopes are technically Leupold just not the US leupold with the lifetime warranty. NEVER buy anything on Ebay if it doesn't list the UPC. If the UPC is googled and it is a REAL Leupold the exact model will appear. If you then buy it and it comes as a knockoff with a different UPC Ebay will step in and Paypal will refund your money. A pretty sure give away is if it is made in China or Hong Kong it is a fake.

I just looked on E-bay and there are some good looking scopes there...but I am wondering which ones are real ???

This has been my concern with buying on eBay, Gun Broker, etc. I'm a Leupold fan, and if I want a 1 inch tube and AO I am stuck with buying used online or a new scope that may or may not be legit. I did buy a new Leupold 4.5-14x40 ao 1 inch tube a little while back off of GB from a large gun shop. Figured I was safe going that route.

Two things I noticed with Leupold scopes on ebay. Some sellers chose to include the Ser. # and there is a search filter to verify authentication. The accuracy of that filter is unknown to me.
My neighbor bought a used Savage 308 with hundreds of rounds ammo and what he thought was a Leopold scope. The price he paid was good if the scope was genuine. It was not.
If calling Leupold to verify serial numbers is the only way to check for a fake sure isn't fair to Leopold. That extra work ultimately adds to the cost of a new scope.

And some people don't understand why we need tariffs against the Chinese. Hint: their stated goal is to bury us economically in the next 10-15 years. They do that by stealing all the intellectual property (R&D included) they can, then start making fakes that are almost as good. It's why I won't buy a Chinese scope, nor much else if there are alternatives.

The last Leupold scope I purchased was back in 2013. While I was shopping, I ran across the counterfeit scope alert someplace....at the LGS or Leupold's website (?)

This is dated Jan 2017:

https://www.leupold.com/service-support/resources/counterfeit-warning

Seems like the market is now flooded with fakes.

FWIW, I purchased the scope from an ebay seller. Leupold told me it's genuine.

Fake Leupold update

Bottom Gun Sir,

For me it was a visual comparison. When I open the box it was pretty obvious something wasn't right. They just didn't have the attention to detail of a Leupold scope.

The scopes came out of southwest Wisconsin.

I did get my money back so I was very fortunate there. He was stumbling for words during our phone conversation when confronted. I did followup with the seller a few days latter to confirm payment was sent. Then his demeanor was buddy buddy??

Still not 100% convinced that the seller was aware of what he had but his personality sure did change. I learned a lesson.

I've found, with various counterfeit products, that sometimes the ebay seller believes they are selling a genuine product. The seller may have been victimized by another seller, this makes sorting things out all the more difficult. Also in some parts of the world counterfeiting is a normal business practice so sellers don't really see themselves as doing anything wrong. Rolex watches come to mind.

OK, you got scammed, I have also been scammed. A lot of stuff on Ebay is stuff people have bought on Wish. Wish sells A LOT of stuff to Ebay sellers and Craigs List sellers. It was a bogas story you where told. If you look on the Wish sight you will see brands like what you got, along with Tasco, Bushnell. Buck knives as well. I know since my bum nephew buys off of Wish and resales on Ebay and represents them as Buck .

I have bought stuff off of Ebay and gotten it, just to find out it's a Wish counterfeit. In fact I am in a battle with them right now over a picattiny rail I ordered off of Ebay. The picture and description said it was made of Aircraft Aluminum. When I got it it was in a Wish envelope and was flat black plastic.

Good luck on getting your money back.
