My model 36's SN is about 20 less than yours. When I bought it new years ago it started out with extraction issues that turned into ejection issues once the extraction one was solved. When the call to Cooper went sour I worked out the extraction/ejection problems myself. My notes from back then mention buying spring stock from the hardware store but don't mention the size used.

How does your new rifle's magazine work? Fwiw, I hope your rifle comes with an extra.

If it's been shot much during it's life, it just might give you no problems. Mine proved to be a winner. After reworking the magazine to fit as it was difficult to extract or insert.

 

Check the ejector. On the early guns, such as yours, it is only retained by a set screw. Mine fell out one day.Later versions had a pin through it as well.
Mine went back for the pin. My second one had the pin.
If memory serves, my first one was about #125, and the second closer to #300.
I’ll spare you the rest of my 36 saga.

 

I was not able to pick it up today due to work, but should be able to grab it tomorrow. I read a post from a member “shoothog” from years back and he mentioned the stronger extraction springs. I don’t have enough posts to message him, but hope he sees this or someone that has the details. I will post some pics soon. Thanks everyone for the help. This will be my first Cooper .22 and I hope it’s not a nightmare.

 

I was able to sneak out and pick up the 36. Very understated quality. Nothing fancy. I love the barrel contour and can’t wait to shoot it. I cycled a few rounds through it and it functioned properly. I have attached a few quick pics along with the bolt. Also, could someone tell me if the scope bases take a certain type of ring? Thanks!

 

The scope bases were designed to work with Warne Premier rings, which look very nice on that rifle. They are no longer manufactured but are available on Ebay and other places.

You have a very nice early production Model 36 Classic. If you got one that has no extraction/ejection issues, or magazine feed issues you should be good to go.
They had Shilen barrels and are very accurate. Mine shoots best with Lapua Midas plus. It has no problems and I really enjoy it. Others have had ejection problems.
The original owners manual states that it requires about 250 rounds to smooth out the action.
