Concave Case Head Match Ammo?

I'm getting ready to try a variety of different ammo.

When I was a kid, there was some match ammo with concave bases that my Marlin 880c loved. The base directed the ignition flame into the powder for more consistent ignition.

I couldn't afford a steady diet of those at the time, and just went to CCI Mini-Mags for general shooting.

I'd like these to be the first ones I try on my ammo hunt, but I can't find them. I thought maybe it was CCI Green Tag, but it turns out that stuff is just sorted CCI SV.

Does anyone know the ammo with the concave case head I'm talking about?

Thanks!

Yep, Green Tag is sorted alright.
It's sorted by day of the week.
Today we are gonna fill these plastic boxes,
instead of the usual cardboard ones used for SV.

Watch the CCI factory tour video.
No sorting, no lot grading.
Only testing is for function (bang) and chamber pressure (safety).
Straight off the assembly line and into boxes.

Differences in results are dependent on
if it was a good day at the Lewiston factory. ;)

I've learned not to be an ammo snob.

This target was shot using an M69 Romanian Trainer and Winchester bulk ammo back around 2008-2009 when I was shooting almost constantly.

It was only three shots -- a sight-in proof for hunting -- and I'd have done five rounds had I known I'd be using it to illustrate a point, but I always got similar results. For some reason that rifle loved Winchester bulk ammo.

Federal use to make ammo like that, I have not seen it for years. It was their 22lr Match .

Don’t hold your breath. I didn’t post the pic to satisfy you, I posted it to show the capability of that ammo in one lot. FWIW, I have an .22 PCP air rifle that will shoot five shots into one hole at fifty yards. It’s not too hard to imagine that a rimfire rifle can shoot as well as that one pic. Now why don’t you go and obsess over something else.

This is five shot groups I shot a couple days ago. Only one group managed to shoot into one hole and that group is the exception not the norm. The other nine groups are what Tac-22 is capable of the majority of the time.

I didn’t think you would because that is not capability that is ammo lottery at work. And I guess you can’t prove any thing but how well you tell stories. But you have a nice day any way.

D,

I'm not familiar with their current production elements, but in the past is was common to change and experiment with powders based on what was on the market and pricing. There are a few powder options for many rimfire offerings, so deviation is something you will see from time to time within the same product line. I will have to get some current production lots of SV and Green Tag to see if they are different in powder. Yes, I remember my book. Nearly 20 years have passed and CCI has made many changes since.

J,

Yes, there is quality issues for sure, and thankfully I'm not a company rep. My only point is that they do indeed accuracy test the ammo with frequency. As for their results, it seems to be within their specs; I have no control nor say in any of that. For match ammo, I shoot Midas + mostly with a bit of R-50, so I have no idea how well or poorly Green Tag shoots. I'll pick up a few bricks from some lot samples and check it out.
