Walked into a semi local shop today while running a grocery errand for the Boss, after a good bit of browsing I spied a S&W M17, grips made it a fairly recent one then I noticed the $549.95 price tag. Huh, that can't be right. Asked to see it and gave it a really good going over as at that price I'm wondering what's wrong with with it. Nada I can find, so I told the clerk I'd take it and asked about the box, he went in the back room to look and shortly the owner came out with the consigment paperwork. He showed me the owner had dropped the price that morning and his help had immediately made a new tag. He said if he'd known that he'd have bought it for the shop and priced it higher. I've bought quite a few firearms over the years from him and sold or consigned several, he just shook he head and said you stole it, I smiled. Thus setting up a head to head with the M17-2 I picked up a couple of months ago.
Today's purchase.

I have several M17s and pre 17 K22s, nothing newer than -4. Have no experience with any “new” ones. I don’t do stainless but have taken 617s on trade. In both 6 & 10 shot models. I would never by one unless a steal but I did shoot them and found them to be as accurate as old models. Triggers weren’t as smooth as old blue models. $549 is a steal for any K frame with adjustable sights, regardless of dash or model, if in high condition.

The high in Edmond, Oklahoma was 9 F yesterday, a 100-year-old record low temperature for a high temperature, if that makes sense. We easily beat out Hollis, New Hampshire where my son lives. A record low of 0 was also recorded two days ago. I just lie awake at night timing how long the furnace stays on, and how short it stays off.

I am still looking forward to the comparison, Gerald.

If you are interested I have a set of target grips that would look super nice on thst gun the grain on it is perfect I believe it’s from 1964
Nice stocks but, those are not from 1964; in 64 they would have been walnut and they had the diamond pattern around the escutcheon until 67…they have the features and appearance of 80’s production.

Yes, you could have written lyrics for Rodgers and Hammerstein. Their version was, "OOOOKlahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain." I'm originally from the East Bay Area in California, so all this wind was new to me in 1987. We hired native Oklahomans living in a very rural area of the state when we built our plant there. I asked one of them one late windy night, "Hey, how did Rodgers and Hammerstein describe the Oklahoma wind?" He looked at me like I just rode in from New York City and simply said, "We just call it the ....in' wind." Lesson learned.

Opening class in Enroute Air Traffic Control the Instructor asked how we liked how the wind blew there, my reply "it doesn't blow, it sucks", for a young man from North Carolina it wasn't very impressive but we did grow to appreciate a lot of things about Oklahoma. My wife's youngest sister and her husband lived in Edmond and still have a house there but live full time in Austin Texas. He is a retired Financial wheel with Devon Energy. We spent a couple of weeks in Edmond over the years, played a little golf at Kicking Bird and Oak Tree where they were members.

Okay...Finally got the two M17's and my Colt King Cobra to the range...3 five shot groups each at 15 yards (sharing the range with another shooter or I'd have gone to 20 yards) with first CCI SV and then CCI MiniMags.

First is the CCI SV starting from the bottom with the 17-9, then the 17-2 and then the King Cobra....at the top is a 15 round group from my Keltec P17 with factory replacement slide witha Green Dot...I was really impressed with it.

Next target is with CCI MiniMags with the Colt at the bottom, then 17-9 and top 17-2...I managed to pull one of the Colt shots really, really high...its marked....my back was starting to give me fits is the only excuse I've got...

The numbers are the order the groups were shot in, all in all I'm not unhappy with any of them but the 17-2 is the clear winner in my opinion, not a runaway and with a better rest I think all three are capable of much better but that's it for now. Hopefully this will be useful to some folks.

Very Nice!!!! Yep, I'd say the 17-2 was the most consistent.

Keep the range reports coming!!! (y)
