I've been working on a gun and i have the reciever stripped and finished, now i have a dilema... Can i polish the blued barrel so its silver again (take off the blueing) or am i just going to have to buy a SS barrel. Thanks

You surely can. Just get some blue remover and follow the directions. Just be sure to keep oil on it when your done. Old benchrest shooters used to use chrome molly barrels in the white to keep them cool. They will not rust any faster than blued steel. Just keep oil on it, and if you do see some rust, easy to fix with a little steel wool.

Cool in the sun I presume?

A silver barrel retains heat more than a black (blue) one.

Black versus White (silver), black radiates heat more, but it also absorbs radiated heat more, ie if the heat source is external radiation then go for white to keep things cool, but if the heat source is internal, ie as the result of firing shots in a gun (or your auto's engine) go for black - that's why your radiator is black and not chromed.

I was trying to remove some rust from a blued barrel one night and tried using pb blaster for an oil and found out it works really really fast at removing rust and the blue as well when scrubbing with steel wool or a scotch pad. I've tried the blueing remover before and it seemed pretty time consuming. I know if I ever intend on taking blueing off again it'll be pb blaster that i use and then i'll degrease with brake cleaner or something.

I did a .243 25 years ago.

You can take the blue off with bluing remover, naval jelly or sandpaper. If you polish it up it will look really good.

Until it rusts, which it will. :(
It has never had a spot of rust on it since. 2 of my blued guns rusted but the 700 Rem .243 never did. I use Birchwood Casey Sheath or Breakfree on it about once a year or when I shoot it.

I can second the navel jelly. I used it to scrub a barrel for a smoke pole that had been given to me. I tested the gun and was very impressed with its abilities before cleaning it. so I decided to send it off to be blued. before I sent it off I filed pits off of the outside flats and then decided to hit the bore with the navel jelly. It was kind of a surprize when the blueing came off. It didn't matter and I had expected it to be harmed but did not expect it to just disappear. crazy.
