Butler Creek Mag for 10/22

I just bought a BC hot lips 25 rnd mag for my 10/22 and so far am not having good luck. I am using Federal bulk .22 HS as I understand these mags don't like Remingtons. My factory mags and ramline work well. So far it seems like the magazine is dragging on the bottom of the bolt. People seem to love these magazines or hate them. What have you folks that have had problems but eventually got them to run done to reslove the issues?

I've tried and tried to get the BC mags to work for me, in 3 different 10/.22's to no avail. The solution for me is to forget about aftermarket magazines altogether The factory mags are reliable, and when that's all you use, changing them is very fast. For me, messing with aftermarket mags is like trying to teach a dog to spell.

Inspect the front and rear, in the area that fits into the magazine well, where the seams meet, for molding flash. Knock the seams down flat with a fine file or sandpaper until they're nice and smooth and flat.

I got all of mine to run reliably after I cleaned them up. Pretty much every one needs some minor clean-up work when you buy them.

The Steel Lips need the same thing, usually. They have to be able to seat flat and flush with the retainer points in the rifle.

Lt,
Yes, they can drag the bottom of the bolt. I have two different 10/22's, one they hit the bolt, the other...not. My fix was to file/sand off that rail that sticks up on the top of the mag. Only take enough off to clear the bolt, because if you take too much & leave a gap, it will jam in a whole different way. I shoot all bulk now with no issues whatsoever.

The left is modifyed, the right oem:

What this guy said.

I have a couple steel lips and on my SR I had to file down the lip a bit because the SR has a sloppy bolt and it would hang up on the lip. The steel lips worked fine in my 15 year old 10/22 without filing them down.

I had a problem with one of my plastic lips falling out of the mag well when I tried to load it into the mag well. Turns out it was actually accepting 26 rounds not 25 and the extra round didn't allow it to click into the mag well all the way. So I load it till it's full (26), then remove that one round and that plastic lip works fine. I am probablly one of the few who actually prefers the plastic lips over steel.

I've never had much luck with extended mags for the 10/22s, although I haven't tried the TI ones yet. I picked up a pair of BC Hot Lips at a local place for about five bucks each a couple years ago, and after about three frustrating range trips of five or six jams a mag, they died a spectacular death as victims of my .223's Varmint Grenades.

Since then I've just stuck with the factory mags, and if I feel the need to have more at hand, I slap my TriMag in. Never HAVE run out of ammunition in the middle of a hot firefight with a 10/22 as yet. :bthumb:

these photo's of the filing look like steel lips, his question was in hot lips..

I bought my first BC hot lips at least 20 yrs ago, before they even had a steel lip mag.. I would say the hot lip made it less than a year before it would just flat *** fall out. at the time they were not cheap, 14$ a new 10/22 was 99$

Today new hot lips here go for 18$, I wouldn't give a dime for one. the fit is so sloppy, that the little nub in the front wears down , there nothing there to hold the mag in place,,

I still use it sometimes if we are doing major shooting....
so has anyone here been able the take the red hot lips apart and replace that nub with a steel peg ??? there must be away to fix this thing,,,,

I do also have steel lips and have never had a jam using those....

I have both the Hot Lips and Steel Lips (bought earlier this week).

I get jams with both, it's not really a big deal to me since it's a .22. My Hot Lips doesn't jam as much since I've had it for a couple years, it's smoothed out over time. I figure the same with the Steel Lips. My bolt did hit the Steel Lips, but not anymore. Just keep shooting, everything should smooth out.
