Broken Kimber

Guys I'm just sorely disappointed. I've been itching to get a premium lightweight classic sporter and found a really nice low mileage Kimber 82 not far from home. Very nice walnut with some nice grain and just by the pictures you could tell this rifle was shot little and was well cared for. Price was fair for both buyer and seller so I pulled the trigger and was ready to jump in the car and pick her up. But then fate got in the way. I developed a weird infection called cellulitis that really knocked me on my tail but shipping was a reasonable $37 and I was in no shape to drive. Three days later my local gun shop called and said they received my Kimber but it had been damaged in shipping. They explained it had a broken bolt. WHAT? How in the heck do you break a bolt? I raced to the shop and sure enough the handle was broken off of the bolt. To say I was heartbroken might be a bit of an overstatement but I was sorely disappointed. The rifle is headed back to the seller and I sure hope they can get the parts to repair the broken bolt. Beautiful rifle that I had high hopes for. Here's a picture of the broken bolt. Are repair parts available for these rifles?

I’m thinking your rifle is an 82C which unfortunately have a weak bolt handle design as compared to the 82A and B actions. There are a couple of Kimber parts guys that list their stuff on Gun Broker, take a look there. I actually think a good welder could fairly easily TIG weld your handle back on, but he’d need to be versed in doing gun parts. You’d have to disassemble the bolt and get collar that the handle attaches to off so that the heat doesn’t damage things.

Unfortunately the shipping companies, all of them, seem to have a vendetta against anything firearms related lately. My local slobber shop has had some pretty nice stuff destroyed, go missing or simply neglected (left behind) lately. One in particular was a pristine Winchester 88 in 284 win with a spare mag that was destroyed. The stock was shattered, literally shattered. The outer box was pristine, the inner box and plastic wrap were beat to hell and filthy with a fork lift tire track on it…. Some people don’t deserve oxygen. I had Ruger sent to Ruger for work almost go “missing” when I went to the FedEx hub to pick it up. I was dealing with one guy that was saying “that package is on a truck and will be back any minute.” Another guy come in asking I need help so I hand him the slip, he disappears and reappears with my box. The other guy come in just as I grab it and said “ I need that back to scan it out” the helpful guy gives him a look like what the hell…. I politely declined and said sorry you can’t steal my property today. He had flagged the box coming from Ruger….. 😡🤬

Kimbers, Coopers, Dakotas no parts. Scattered availability for Remington 40X Sporter. More plentiful for Winchester 52 as made longer and larger company. I'm not sure about Anschutz; quite a few sold. Remington 541S quite a few sold but not familiar with parts availability, not from Remington for sure. You're taking a chance with any of them regarding accidents. Relatively few parts break from use.

The gun was on consignment and I believe they will repair or replace the bolt in order to have a functional rifle. As a shooter, and not a collector, this incident, along with stories like yours, has spooked me regarding purchasing firearms with little or no parts availability.
