I didn't vote because it depends on which gun. It was probably a once a year thing for me until I got a 10X and learned the Turbos and clones can have ignition issues when oil & or dirt gets inside the bolt. I do that one every few range sessions
I Don't take them apart very often.. I wipe them down and take a air hose and blow the firing pin channel and extractor and ejector out good.. q-tip to the bolt face. Little dab of gun grease to the wear marks and send it back home...
Clean and lube my rimfire match bolts with Hornady One Shot after each match. Use the same in the raceway or bolt channel.
Take 'em down once in a great while for a little look-see and interior clean. It's almost unnecessary. The Hornady is some very clean-running stuff ... leaves very little behind and doesn't really collect or contribute to gunk.
I should revise my answer. I treat my 10/22 with a bull barrel, kidd trigger kit, kidd bolt and charging handle more like a benchrest gun than my 457 and Savage bolt. I have taken apart the Ruger 10/22 bolts and cleaned them, but never my bolt guns. Again, all with Hornady’s one shot.
mine gets a spritz of non chlorinated brake cleaner from the local auto parts store when I clean my barrel about every 500- 750 rounds followed by a [very light dab of grease with a Q tip on the bearing surfaces
I cleaned the bolt on my 2500X after a bout a case and a half of ammo. Actually I didn’t because when I took it apart it was already clean. I am careful not to get any fluids in there though.
They don't need to be cleaned very often. Some never take them apart. The few times I've taken mine apart I haven't seen much gunk. There's some black residue on the white patch I use but I doubt it's enough to cause issues.
The bolt and internals are Melonited. So they already pretty slick and don't require much lube, if any. I've seen Stiller write that if you have to use lube inside use something light like Ballistol. I run mine dry. And yes, a tiny bit of grease on the locking lugs and in the cocking notch is good
I run suppressed most of the time so I really should clean mine at least yearly but I don’t then am surprised when the firing pin won’t fall.
