I have been away from Varmint Hunting with the 22lr round for quite a long while due to job and life changes. I am now getting back. Back then the most accurate and hardest hitting for me was the Winchester Power Point. Ground Hogs is my number one target. My mag is best 75 to 125 yards but I like stalking up close 50 yds or less. What do you all use?

The new plastic tipped 30 grainers shoot really well out of one of my .22 WMR's. I'd recommend whatever HP or ballistic tip that shoots best out of your gun. They only work well when you can hit what you're aiming at.:bthumb:
Missed the "lr" in the title. When you said "my mag" in the body thought you were in WMR mode.

CCI minimags have always served well for varmints. And been reasonably accurate in a good number of rifles.

My favorite 22 LR ammo for Varmints is the CCI Stingers The accuracy out of some rifles is not that great but if you have a gun that shoots them halfway decent those Stingers will really work well. I do like the CCI Velocitors also especially on the larger size varmints, in many cases they seem to give more accuracy in a wider variety of guns. For your criteria "groundhogs at 50 yards" either of these two cartridges will lay them low in fact they both will work very well out to 100 yards with no problem.

Whatever shoots best out of your firearm of choice because shot placement is critical! I'm presently using Winchester 42max subsonic because my GM barreled 10/22 shoots it better than all others I have tested, hits like a brick out 60 yards (farthest one I've shot at this season) so far. I do prefer hollow points for stopping woodchucks.

OK, thanks everyone for your input. I plan on starting with the fast steppers first, I was in Laredo Texas a couple of weeks ago and at Academy Sports I found some Winchester 40 gr HP 1435 FPS, really big hollowpoint and Aguila Interceptors and right down the street at Gander Mtm they had a lot of CCI Mini-Mags 40gr HP and CCI Velocitor's HP. My last rifle liked the Winchester Power Points and shot
them around 5/8" at 50yds but down to about 300 rounds. I am hoping that one of the Hyper Velocity rounds work best.

This all so true, but when I am testing a round accuracy I am looking for anything up to 3/4" at 50yrds., so it I have two rounds in the running and if one shoot 5/8" and if one shoots 3/4" but has much better performance from it's bullet design it will be the one I choose.

I have had the best luck out of almost all my 22's with Winchester Power Points, Very accurate round with a big hollow point and man is it hard hitting. Now I have switched and shoot all my guns with suppressors on them so I want to stay subsonic . The very best round I have ever seen is the CCI segmented 40gr subsonic. Very accurate and unbelievable knock down and stay down power, I have been using them on gophers and prairie dogs here with normal ranges being 100-200 yds. with excellent results. Both these rounds have been universally accurate out of my guns which include 10/22 , Browning T-Bolt's and a CZ455 American along with a Savage 93.

Fella's;

Out of my CZ452 American, the 40 grain Winchester PowerPoints consistently do 1250 fps over my Oehler 35P. I just put them to use this past weekend on a small varmint shoot I host. The terminal performance is the best I've yet found when coupled with the accuracy requirement. My gun, off bench & bags, will shoot MOA at 100 yards with the PowerPoints.

The power points @1320 or 1435 fps will shoot through a coyote @75 yards if you hit them low and left they won't make 50 yards if that. Some will drop in tracks,but the CCI velocitor hits a little harder and will usually anchor anything with a well placed shot.Either or is top notch,these work for me. As well as the other rounds mentioned here.
