I want to buy a Marlin .22 magnum to address a coyote problem on my property. What is the best model and years of manufacture to look for? Are all .22 magnums bolt action? Is a clip or tube fed model best? What is the best scope for the .22 magnum? Please educate me on what to look for. What I want is a good field rifle. I shall comb the pawn shops as soon as I get your input. Thanks in advance.

Keep your shots with in 100-125 yards, shoot accurately at heart lungs or brain and your Maggie will do the job your asking of it.

I like the Federal 50G HPs as well as the newer Hornady Critical Defence rounds. But I always keep some FMJs at hand as I like the added penetration on head shots.

Buy a couple different boxes and shoot them. The rifle will quickly show you what IT likes.

As for scope, choose a rimfire specfic scope OR buy a paralax adjustable scope.

Nerostarr,
I have a Marlin 22 mag M57M. It's a lever action with a one piece walnut stock. I glass bedded the action. The gun is very accurate even if the trigger isn't great. With Winchester hollow points it shoots about at 1/2 " at 50 yards. At 100 yards it shoots about 1" to 1 1/2". It has a steel receiver rather than an aluminum receiver like the Marlin 56 in 22 LR (my first rifle, Christmas present from my father when I was 18.). Sold one to a buddy and he's thrilled with it. He has shot numerous coyotes with it. I thought I had an extra one in my safe. It appears my grandson five fingered it, long story. They are hard to find as they didn't make them very long.

I do have a Browning pump 22 magnum with a walnut stock. I might let go of. It's in great shape. I have not shot it much. They are very, very rare and I don't know what it's worth.

Recently sold my Marlin 982SV heavy barrel 22 magnum. Took a while to remove the coppering from the barrel from new hornady V-Max 30gr, but once done it proved an exceptional shooter. Could shoot groups into the 0.3s at 50m, and 0.7" at 100m. Try the Hornady V-Max in whatever you buy - it is a precise load and will I suspect do well in alot of Marlin 22 mags.
