Best ammo for a stock Tikka T1X MTR

I just got a T1X and I bought some Lapua Long Range. This shoots very good out of the gun but it's expensive. The guys at my local store use this for competition and they like it for their T1X. I'm looking for cheaper options that shoot good also.

What's the most consistent and accurate ammo for a bone stock T1X MTR?

We all have a different opinion or experience, but there's enough T1X shooters here to get a good, consistent conclusion. At least I can learn some good ammo that's worth trying and what to avoid.

If there's a thread on this already please point me to it because I didn't see it.

jp,

try some SK long Range or SK Rifle match. The SK pistol stuff is darn good too!

My T1x likes SK Rifle Match and R50. Neither of those are "cheap". It will shoot SK Standard+ and Norma Match-22 pretty well too (the latter also made by RWS), but not as well. Having said that, every rifle will have unique ammo preferences. What shoots well in mine may not in yours, and vice-versa. The only way you will know what your rifle shoots best is to try quite a varietyof ammos, from less expensive to more. If you're lucky your rifle won't be ammo fussy and maybe even a cheap date, loving the "low-priced spread". But it's fun to find out.

Not to be overly simplistic but, the best ammo for any .22, Tikka included, is the ammo that is proven to shoot best through testing.

I know 3 people that shoot Tikkas in ARA factory class. One of them, shoots almost exclusively Eley match. He is usually top dog but, he spends a ton of money lot testing Eley to find a few bricks that shoot good. The other 2 both shoot SK standard + for practice and lapua long range in competition. They both are also excellent shooters with very accurate guns.

The most expensive part of shooting RFs is finding ammo that shoots well.

My T1x (or any of my other rifles) have never shown a preference to any particular brand over another in a similar price range. What shoots well in all of them is good lot#s of quality ammo. So when I get a good lot of Center-X it shoots pretty well in anything I try it in. OK maybe one rifle might shoot lot #A a little better than lot #B and another rifle vice versa but they all shoot either pretty well

When I used my T1x for ARA Factory class I shot Lapua Center-X and Midas+. Thee same ammo I use in my custom RFBR rifles that I use for ARA Unlimited class. The 3 lots of Eley that I have don't shoot as well in any of them. It shoots great but I get too many random flyers for it to be competitive

My lower priced ammo of choice in my T1x is Norma TAC22. It shoots very well for the price. It also shoots well in my other rifles that I've shot it in. Some have suggested CCI SV. I would normally agree except the two lot numbers I have on hand aren't very good and it didn't shoot well in my Tikka or anything I've tried them in

If your gun likes Lapua long range I'd see about finding some SK Long Range for a reasonable price. But that's harder to find right now than Lapua long range.

Norma TAC-22 is very reasonably priced and while it can't keep up with either of those ammo options, it's 1/4 to 1/5 the price. If you want to learn to shoot well, go out on the worst weather days and practice shooting with TAC-22 - while it will have some scatter it won't make much difference if the wind is blowing your shots more than it's scattering.
Many shooters have good luck using CCI standard as their budget ammo, although it's pretty popular and so the price point has migrated from budget toward mid-range.

I'm seeing a lot of price variance in 22 ammo - a box of Lapua Long Range can be as cheap as $15.50 but some charge $22. So unless you're buying into a known-good lot, I'd get to know the price point of several good ammo options and minimize the amount of money those vultures make on me. Get in the habit of checking a number of sources regularly or just plain old backorder from a retailer and wait for it to arrive.

Wow! thanks y'all! This is exactly what I was hoping to learn. I wish I had the time to try every box of ammo to find out what my gun likes. I will focus on some of the ones that were consistently mentioned and that will be a great starting point.

I had a box of CCI Subsonic 40gr 1050fps. At 25 yards it was grouping almost as good as the Lapua Long Range, but stretched out to 100 yards you can start to tell the difference.

We just ransom rested my wife's new target pistol yesterday. We shot 5 different varieties of Eley, 2 of CCI, 3 of SK and center-x. Center-x was by far the best but, SK yellow and pistol match tied for a close second place. The worst, by far, was tenex. We repeated the test 4 times because it was so bad. I thought something must have been loose on the rest but it repeatedly shot 4-5 inches at 50 yards. Center-x was well under an inch and standard+ and pistol averaged 1- 1 1/2". She will likely shoot yellow box at matches because it is 50% the cost of center-x.

I haven’t tried any ammo more expensive than SK Semi-Auto, the best I’ve shot so far. But then again I don’t compete formally, so I haven’t looked any further. But my experience so far is all ammo is going to have flyers, some less often, and some that have flyers that land in the infield instead of the outfield.

My T1x 20”bbl loves good subsonic loads. Anything subsonic is better than HV.

for plinking I use NormaTAC and some CCISV capable of great groups, but too many flyers per box to be competitive still price per grin ratio is very good 😊

For informal Target Shooting pretty much anything SK much higher price per grin

for competitive games lot tested ammo for me that’s Lapua CX hurts the wallet and the competition equally! 😅

My T1X will shoot most any ammo. I shoot long range steel matches out to 400yds. I use SK Long Range for matches. The best everyday shooting ammo is Eley Contact, it shoots well out to 500yds. ( $ 5.25 / box from Killough's every day) Contact shoots way above it's price point. I also use CCI SV, and Norma 22 Tac, but you start seeing vertical around 300yds.

I picked up a T1X UPR last week and had a session testing all the ammo i had at home.

Winchester subs were average to rubbish in mine
Ely Field HP were pretty good
Lazer were awful, some being supersonic
RWS Field were disappointing
CCI HP Subs were the best at a consistent 15mm 10 shot groups at 54m

I have 500 SK Magazine to try as these have always shot well in previous 22lr rifles.

In relation to the other thread about solid 22lr vs HP on rabbits I would rather use the more accurate solid and stick with head shots than reduce ranges and chances by using a less accurate HP.

I fired at least 50 of each different ammo above in 10 round groups as each subsequent group did tighten up, some more so than others. From a look on a few online forums and youtube it seems the SK always perform well, the SK+ doing as well as the SK Match but cheaper and the Lapua doing well but definitely more expensive.

The good thing with the 22lr is that its quiet and cheap and no recoil so you can practice plenty and really get to know what works.
