Bases blow up

It appears the base of the cartridge is not fully surrounded by the chamber when it fired, since the brass base spread open some distance upward from the rim. I am not familiar with A17 but see it is a semiauto. Firing out of battery (bolt not closed) or as BCHem stated, headspace issues are my guesses, in that order. Brand new, I'd contact Savage and they'll likely want it back for a fix before someone gets hurt. I would quit firing it.

Does not look like an out of battery rupture.
What I see is a sheared head, likely caused by
weakened or cracked rim, occuring during the cupping and heading process. Other possibility,
indicated by the missing portion of rim in pic 3,
is an overcharged cartridge. I've had that happen also.
Not totally unexpected with Winchester rimfire cartridges. :cautious:

A friend of mine have a Ruger 77/17 in 17 wsm caliber and I shoot few rounds of the same ammo box and everything was great , the shells came out in nice condition, planning to send my rifle to the Savage factory next Monday, I'll post any results of the inspection, I appreciate your comments, thanks

In an unusual turn of events, I am in complete agreement with jaia. That looks like an ammo problem and not a gun problem. Looking at your third picture, I'd say that someone at Winchester ammo saw that the case forming process made some junk. And rather than scrap those defective cases, they ran them through the forming die a second time. I've never seen a separated base blown INWARD above the rim. That was a defect caused by the forming equipment.

If you are referring to me, that would be a yes and also if you referring to me, I was definitely not trying to hijack your post. I was just simply asking if anyone, possibly you had seen any evidence of splits in the necks of their 17 WSM ammo. I have had some 17 HMR. ammo that ruptured the brass around the rim very similar to what was in the photos that also had a split at the necks.

Edit: I re-read and you said "Brand New" If you haven't shot it much at all (dirty) get a hold of savage. Have a good day! :)

The Savage A17's, 22Mag, 17HMR and your 17WSM use "Delay Blowback" action versus 22lr's which use blowback.

Possibly? This delay is not functioning as well as it should.

I'd make sure the mechanism (small piece that protrudes on top of bolt upwards when charging handle is inserted is cleaned as recommended in your manual) and the receiver cleaned especially where that protruding piece seats into (according to your manuals instructions).
