August 2023 CZ/BRNO 25 Yard Scoped Online Benchrest Match

Well folks, here is my first go at starting a 25 Yard Scoped match. I have tried to copy and paste from the July match. Please let me know if you see any errors or omissions. I hope that regular shooters and newcomers alike will find some decent range weather and join in the fun this month.

(One note: The Dominion Outdoors link for USBR targets doesn't bring up the targets. I don't know if this is temporary or permanent. Try an internet search.)

Guidelines:

CZ or BRNO scoped sporters - less than or equal to 9.0 lbs when weighed with the magazine removed. The CZ 452, 453, 455, and 457 Varmint models should qualify unless your glass and rings are more than 2 pounds, but as far as BRNO Models 3 and 4 -- sorry guys, you'll have to step up to the 50 yard distance.

Any safe trigger. Maximum magnification of 9x on the scope. (Those with variable scopes set them to 9x or lower).

No aftermarket barrels or stocks - only CZ's original stocks and barrels. It is also prohibited to swap the stocks of different CZ models such as taking the stock from a Varmint and putting it on a Trainer. If one has damaged his/her original CZ stock, they may order the same exact factory replacement stock for their specific model. There are other BR games on RFC for dramatically altered rifles. We are trying to encourage competition with unmodified or minimally modified scoped CZ sporters. As to custom stock bedding performed on a factory stock, no compound-bedding allowed, pillared or non, and plain pillar bedding is prohibited as well.

Target is the USBR Target (The Green Monster)

22 long rifle

Fired from a benchrest using separate front and rear support and a bi-pod is fine if the shooter prefers. Gun vices and one piece rests are not allowed.

Distance to target is 25 yards

Time limit - 1 hour for unlimited sighters and the 25 rounds for score

You can shoot on an indoor range if it is your only option, but please report that fact in your post.

You can post multiple targets if each is fired with a different CZ. For example, a shooter could post one with his/her CZ Varmint and another with his/her CZ American and a third with a scoped Ultra Lux! You may shoot up to FOUR targets with EACH rifle and post the highest score fired with each one. Post up any target you shoot if you choose so we can all praise you for your perseverance and improvements. Just don't forget to go back and mark only your best as "Official Entry" before the end of the month.

When posting a picture of your target, please include a "thumbnail" to the post prior to actually posting.
Post a pic of your target (required) and the equipment you used (recommended) in this thread by July 31, 2023.

Honor system, and we couldn't ask for a more honorable bunch.

Wind flags are fine. I usually attach a piece of bright streamer or the like to a stake.

Use this format to post your score(s)

Headed to Wilson Shoals with four CZ's. Weather was pleasant for Georgia in August. The At-One shot well but the Varmint hasn't performed as it used to. The 457 American shot well but I tend to let it rock in the front rest. The fourth was my CZ 527 in 223. At 100 yards the 9 power scope with an unknown parallax offered a fuzzy target. Will need to try another scope. I have a Sightron 6-24x42 AO that looks promising.
This might be my best At-One target, 247 with 4X

The Varmint was fine until the last row.

After the range I stopped by the LGS and saw a 457 MTR in 22lr. Do I need another CZ for $771?

Got to go out this morning. 90*, pretty nice for this time of year. Windy, gusting up to 20mph. Was able to wait between gusts and was affected only a couple of times.
Started off with SK STD +, 244-3X.
Switched to SK Pistol Match. Decided not to adjust the scope, but hold on the 8 ring slightly to the right. Ended up with a 245, 7X. Had fun doing it this way.
For some reason I haven’t had as much enjoyment the last couple of times I’ve been out, but had a good time today.
Kept thinking about Lee (lasttombstone). Knew he would tell me to just relax and have a good time.

Thanks. Very happy with it Charlie. Very happy with the way it shoots.
The stock trigger is better than my 452 was. Adjusted down to 1.25 lbs easily. It’s a hunting rifle so I have no desire to go lower with it, although that might help a little on the bench.
The bolt is butter smooth, feeds effortlessly and locks in tight. Easily changed the screw-on bolt knob to something a little larger for my big hands.
The Royal makes a great suppressor host. Bonus that I got one with nice wood.

Well I shot two targets today one with CCI Standard velocity and one with Eley semiautomatic benchrest. All I can say is that it was fun and that you guys make this look easy!!!! I won’t bore you with pictures of my pitiful performance but I shot a 218 2X with the CCI and a 231 2X with the Eley. Hopefully I’ll do better next time.

I plan on doing some adjustment to the trigger or buying an aftermarket trigger in the immediate future.

Hey Pumpkinheaver - You're quick off the mark! I looked back and it seems you've had your CZ for about 10 days. Glad you had fun. Maybe try a few different kinds of ammunition. You have two more targets this month if you want. There are also Green Monster "practice targets" out there on the web if you want to conserve those official targets.

Like Matt said, we should all just relax and have a good time.

Since mid to upper 90's are forecast for next week I took advantage of the low 80's today and headed to Wilson Shoals. Three CZ 457's, American, At-One, Varmint. Used SK Std+. Shot one target that might become official but still hoping for a better score. Shot an ammo "test" target using CCI SV and SK Std+. Top two rows are CCI SV; bottom are SK. The At-One grouped well with both. The American shot "strings" not sure what that means. Varmint like Sk also.

Varmint scored best. At-One 239 2x. American 225 1x.

A few weeks ago I saw a 457 MTR at a LGS. I took my 457 Lux thinking I might work a trade but their offer wasn't attractive. So I did the only acceptable action and bought the MTR, keeping the Lux. I had recently sold a Win '92 in 38-40 from 1915 and a S&W 38 spl from 1909-15. So I converted two old guns into one new one, with money left over. Range report to follow. Don't know what scope I will use, but has to be AO or side focus.
Gosh this is fun.

An armload of CZs and some decent weather. Sounds like a great day. Nice shooting. Even though that last bull reached out and got you with a really out of family shot again, it's still another target in the 240's.

And oh, that was excellent on-the-fly decision making in the LGS. 👍

I have three rifles set up for this match: 452 American, 457 American, and 457 Varmint, with a history of between 15 and 40 targets scored on each of them. The scores on the 452 and Varmint are close, but with the 457 American I have consistently shot 5 or 6 points worse. So in true scientific fashion I :

1. Changed the scope and ring on the 457 to match to setup on the 452
2. Removed, re-installed and torqued the barrel to 34 in-lb
3. Torqued the action screws to 25 in-lb
4. Added a 0.0015 shim to the bolt
5. Installed the Volquartsen extractor and holder

.... all at once.

Went to the range and shot two pretty sorry targets. Oh well. Maybe time to backtrack and be more systematic, or maybe just shoot better.

Got to the Wilson Shoals range before the heat arrived; shot from 9-12. I recently sold a Win '92 in 38-40 and a S&W 38 special from early 1900's and used the money to buy a 457 MTR. Shot it for the first time today. Only cleaned the bore and torqued the action screws (20#). This is what it did. I was surprised by the Semi-Auto. (Note to self: order more). Will change the trigger spring and adjust as described on this forum.

Well, it’s good to be shooting again, especially with this group. I’ve moved from NC to Viera, FL, bought a house and am trying to get back to normal with tennis and shooting. I’ve worked the last two months getting my guns reassembled, boresighted and cleaned. I joined a club where I can benchrest at 25 yards. This club (Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club) has anything you care to shoot. Today I gathered my gear and set off in a light rain, which stopped before I arrived, set up my target stand at 25 yards and started zeroing my 453 on a green monster. When that was done I went to the lower target to shoot for score. There was NO wind so it was all on me. The last time I shot for score was (I think) June of 2022.
