Athlon Scopes?

Does Athlon make any non-Chinese rifle scopes? If so, which ones and where might they be made? Any opinions on quality -- optics, mechanicals, eye relief, etc.? Since Leupold has abandoned their 1" 6-18X AO scope, I have been looking for a quality substitute. Many other choices have also disappeared. If it ain't tactical and/or 30 mm it just ain't cool!

Edit: And I don't want a huge objective; 40 to 44 mm works just fine.

My understanding is that the Cronus 4.5-29x56 is the only one not made in Jyna. It is made in Japan. The Cronus will give you a nice clear view, but it is 56mm and heavy. It is FFP. I have a Leupold 6-18 that I bought under your supervision years ago. I have been riding the fence on selling it for a while as I feel the need for more magnification. But it seems to be worth more to me than to others... lol.

Doug, are you also looking to stay with second focal plane? I'm struggling to think of anything 18x or more, with less than 50 mm objective. Only think comes to mind is Muller scopes but those are made in China.

Yes, the Optika scopes are first rate -- I have two of them, a 3-15X and a 4-20X. The glass is excellent, the mechanicals are excellent, BUT frankly, they are, IMO, ugly with that HUGE ocular, i.e., too "tactical". I love sleek sporters, and putting an Optika on one of them compromises the aesthetics. So very functional but... If Leupold and other makers can offer scopes with a much smaller and fully usable ocular, why must some other makers offer scopes with jumbo oculars (which also have bolt clearance problems in many rifles unless much higher rings than otherwise necessary are used)? It's just a part of my anti-tactical philosophy. It means, of course, that I bypass some good scopes because of the way they look, not unlike cars. I am old and get to be a curmudgeon. :)

I've been an Athlon dealer pretty since they came on the market, and aside from the big 34mm tube Cronus, some of their earliest scopes weren't the sort of optics I wanted to sell to my friends. But the guys who started up the company were originally working for Bushnell, and they knew their stuff - it just took them a couple of years to get the chinese up to speed when it came to making the sort of quality that serious shooters were going to be satisfied with. Every year after, they've made strides in bringing better quality scopes to the market. I'm plenty satisfied with various ffp scopes I use on the custom rifles that I've built for myself, including four Vudoo repeaters (mostly equipped with the big Cronus scopes), Midas TAC scopes on a couple of CZ457s that I barreled with Shilen ratchets, and several Howa Mini-based CF customs. I've also got Gen II Ares BTRs on a couple of Zermatt Origin custom action rifles. Not ashamed to sell these more current scopes to any of my friends, as Athlon has upped their designs & quality to the point that I'm g-t-g using them in competition on my own rifles.

I think it's been a couple of years since Athlon announced the HERAS line of 1" SFP scopes, and I want to try one of them on a 22RF rifle, but haven't gotten around to it, as the ocular on the ones I've looked at online are rather large - no way they're going to work on something like a M52 unless you go with very high rings. They would probably work well on something like a CZ457 which has a 60* bolt throw, but as mentioned, I've already got good Midas TAC 30mm scopes on my CZs. For the most part, I've gone to eBay to search for used Leupolds like the VXII 6-18x40 & VXIII 4.5-14x40 scopes for the classier 22RF sporters like Anschutz, Cooper, Kimber, & Sako - but they're getting more expensive as time goes on.
