Armalite AR-7 with Bakelite Stock?

Hi Folks!

In another part of RFC, I posted a photo of this new-to-me Armalite AR-7 ...

That led Kaynine to ask:
This is a little off Topic, but does your Armalite AR-7 actually have a Bakelite stock as noted on the attached tag? I always thought that they all had stocks composed of nylon as were the Remington series of Nylon rimfire rifles. A bakelite stock would have been very fragile for this usage IMHO.
Early production versions of the AR-7 made by the original maker, Armalite, did have Bakelite stocks.

And when reinforced with fibers -- typically wood pulp or asbestos -- Bakelite is remarkably strong. Indeed, this example -- which is likely more than five decades old -- doesn't show any evidence of any cracking of any kind.

Enjoy!

Very nice find. I am curious about that AR7. I gave mine to my son who still has it. It is also an original Armalite. I did not think about it being collectible.
I'm not planning to retire on it, but yes, the Armalite made AR-7s have become a bit collectible.

I think that's partially due to general interest in the Armalite brand and its unique designs, and I think its partially due to the better build quality of the Armalite AR-7s as compared to the Charter Arms, Survival Arms, etc. successors. (I'd place the Henry AR-7s in a somewhat different category.)

For what it's worth ... the online version of the Blue Book of Gun Values adds $125 to the value of an Armalite AR-7 for the brown/Bakelite stock.

Enjoy!

I have wanted one of those since I was a kid. every time the JC Penny catalog showed up I would point it out to my parents. they never did buy it for me and it is still on my list if I could find an Armalite one in good shape.

very nice find!
