Aperature Sights on a cz 457 trainer

Hi All,
I just started doing iron sight bench rest 22. I was using my old Winchester mod 47 but the sights are very primitive for my aging eyes. Can anyone recommend a decent aperture rear sight and a corresponding front sight. Thnx.

Thought about aperture sights on my 457 Training Rifle and if I do it I'll use this rear:

and contact Steve Earle for a barrel block for the front sight. Probably use an Anschutz globe since inserts or irises are easy to find.

Looks like about $300 to get the basics so I'm still on the fence about this project.

I had one of those and I think it was too long and interfered with the bold operation unless it was moved forward with part of the base clamp hanging over the ejection port. The adjustments didn't work that well for changing distances often.

If you're serious about the project you have a couple options.

  1. Get a Brno sight set. They are OK, but have some limitations. You'll need adapters for rear sights if you want to add an adjustable iris with diopter and magnification which is especially useful for older eyes. You'll also need custom inserts for the front sight. I don't believe the standard sizes of 18mm or 22mm fit. If you shoot at only at one distance, the sights are OK, but if you change distances often, the adjustments aren't that precise.
  2. Find one of these Anschutz sight bases for Redfield style sights or have one made by a machinist. Then get a Centra rear sight, or a Redfield international rear sight. The front globe could be Gehmann or Anschutz of either 18mm or 22mm size depending on your preference and it will just clamp to the front sight base, no dovetail or block required. You'll have more options this way for adding adjustable front and rear irises with diopters and magnification. Adjustments are more precise if you change distances often.

Here's some pictures of my setup on a 452 trainer.

Good idea to make sure what your goal is....:t. You can easily spend a fair chunk of change trying to make a sporting rifle do what a dedicated target rifle can do and probably do better.

If you just want to try a rear aperture sight instead of the leaf sight, not much money is involved, but if you want to get serious about shooting with aperture sights I'd recommend putting your money toward a rifle built for that purpose.

Just my opinion,

I used the Savage-Anschutz 1411 adapter for the rear with a Redfield Olympic sight, on a CZ 457 Scout for a 12 year old. Intent is to have something for 3-P. Front is an Anschutz globe that clamped on the front sight ramp after removing the original hood and lowering the original post. As previously said, Champions Choice also has one of these rear sight adapters.
