That’s a nice gun you’ve got there. I’ve got a model 48-2 that I shoot occasionally. I really enjoy it. I prefer the CCI Maxi Mag 40 grain FMJ ammo for it.

 

Have one as well. Expired coke bottles & cans die regularly from it.

I installed the lock delete kit on mine. Can't stand that Hillary hole. Or her. 😖

I do need to do a shoot-off between my 648 & my Walther WMP though. Maybe add my Kel-Tec PMR for giggles?

 

48-7 here. The "Classic" with lock. I never use the lock so it doesn't bother me.

Shoots very well.

 

I have a model 48 (blue) in six inch barrel and a 651 with a 4 inch barrel. The 48 doesn't get much use. I bought it as a 'matched set' with a 17. The 651 gets used as a field gun and kit gun when I expect to be walking a great deal and don't want the bulk of a larger 357.

 

I have a first year production Model 48.
It likes 40 grain ammo, but not the lighter bullets. Groups are well under 2" at 25 yards.
As soon as I get a Colt Officers' Model Match in .22 WMR, I plan to test it against the OMM and a couple of Korths - just for fun.

 

Earlier this year I picked up a new 6" M 48. I did not care for the full underlug on the 658, besides I wanted it to match my K 22 and K 38.

 

I have always liked the 48/648 revolvers but have never owned one. Now one handgun that I did own in .22 magnum chambering was a Thompson Center Contender with a 10 inch heavy bbl. Now that one was accurate and an absolute ball to shoot.

 

648 should be my next buy. Selling a 20 ga sxs soon.

 

I have to ask..why the heck doesnt S&W make a 4" 22mag to match the 617..
Is it a complete waist of the 22mags capable performance to shoot it out of a 4" barrel so S&W doesnt do it?

A 4 inch is almost as handicapped as a 6 inch with the WMR, compared to say an 18 inch plus rifle length.
You could get a 648 cylinder for a 4 inch 617. It might (or might not) require a small amount of fitting. It's been done by a few guys.

I don't NEED a .22 Mag handgun, but it would be cool to get a WMR cylinder for my 617, and have a "convertible".

 

Smith offers the M48 Classic in 4”.
A great shooter, and being Blued a better looker then the stainless 648.
