Action Screws for a CZ 457 American.

As you may have guessed, if you have been following my adventures with the left handed CZ 457 American that I bought in 22 WMR but have now converted to 22 LR, I have had that rifle apart in many ways, many times.
Today I decided to install the lightest spring of a spring set I bought here on RFC.. Everything went just fine. I got the spring in and got the trigger reinstalled with no difficulty. I checked the trigger pull weight and got the high end of what that spring offers. No problem.

Then when putting the barreled action back in the stock, the head of the front screw stripped at far less than the 30 inch pounds where I have been setting those screws. The rear one went in at 30 with no trouble.

So, I went to J&P to order a replacement but I did not see 457 action screws listed. I typed 457 Action Screws into the search box on the J&P main page and was sent to action screws for a 455. So, I contacted J&P and was told they do not have the action screws I would need

Has anyone else had the head of one of those screws strip at under 30 inch pounds?

I found the action screws at a company called "DIP." I do not seem to be able to make the purchase unless I create an account. Does anyone know of a company that will sell me the action screws as a single item purchase without creating another vulnerable on-line account?

I looked at the Ebay offerings and most said, "trim to fit, while the only one that did not say that looked suspiciously like a couple of hardware bolts and not the lag bolts that are correct for the rifle. So, what is meant by trim to fit? It looks like some special tool would be needed.

I can't really help with your questions about the screws or trimming to fit. I've ordered from DIP before but don't recall whether I set up an account. To buy something off of Ebay, just click the "buy now" button, enter your shipping and payment info etc. But you may have to establish an Ebay account.

The quick way is to compare the new screws to the old ones and cut to length to match the old ones.
You must have a hacksaw or other metal cutting tool in your toolbox. After you cut them to the right length it only takes a couple swipes with a file on the end and you're ready to go. It's an easy job to do.
I have a small set of bolt cutters and have used them to cut the screws with good luck. I would not use a large pair of bolt cutters.

I order on line all the time. I have 20 different accounts at different businesses. I just get tired of needing to set up another account, just for one purchase.

DIP will probably take a phone order and a check or money order - you could ask them.

Also, any chance of posting a picture of your damaged screw and wrench? If its the "head" of the screw that's damaged, you may have used the wrong size wrench - easy to do. Those screws are Metric, and if you use a slightly smaller American-size Allen wrench, it may seem to fit, but will eventually bugger up the hex in the screw head, or the wrench, or both. Allen wrenches should fit in the screw with just about no play or looseness.
The DIP screws have a Torx head (better), but you still need to make sure to use the right size Torx wrench.
Sets of Allen or Torx wrenches that cost about $5 for a whole set at the Dollar Stores are junk. Get a decent set of wrenches from a brand name outfit.

I have excellent tools. I did not buy any of them at the Dollar Store. It does appear I bunged up that Torx screw head by using the wrong bit. I found the correct bit and was able to set the screws at another much lighter setting, as recommended by someone at DIP. I will try that setting and see how it goes. I will still order a new set of action screws but at least I am not dead in the water.

I took a look at my password list. I was wrong. I don't have 20 on-line accounts with passwords. Including the new DIP account, I now have 32 such accounts, each with a unique password.

Thanks Joe. Too late! I already set up one more account to add to the list I already had. The good news is the screws have already shipped.

The action screws arrived today. That was fast! The heads are of a different design and take a different sized Torx bit but they went right in and tightened to 20 inch pounds with no sweat. As recommended, I am starting at 20 inch pounds and will be testing the results as I increase the torque on the screws one inch lb. at a time. looking for the sweet spot.
