Accuracy of the mossberg 146b-a

Hey folks,
I just found(and bought) a mossberg 146b-a. It is in overall vg++ condition. It comes complete with its aperture site, front sit, and matching period correct 4x mossberg scope. Bore is strong, but slightly dusty. I think it will clean up to perfect condition. I will get it tomorrow. The background check system here in Colorado is currently down.

Anyway, I did a search on this forum for the 146 b-a and had 240+pages of threads returned. Way to many for me to be able to sort through and find useful info.

So here is the question, what kind of grouping do you think this rifle should shoot, lets say 50 and 100yds, federal lightning or other basic off the shelf ammo. What if it had some match grade ammo?

I'll post pics tomorrow when I get it.

thanks in advance!
Mark

Edit: BTW - $165 out the door.

mossie

Have a 46B(b), lil' older but comparable. 50 yards benchrest, with an old 4-12X Bushnell scope:
Wolf Match Target: .485"
Eley Target (yellow box): .453"
CCI Mini Mag HP: .478"
Federal Auto Match: yuck, didn't even measure or record it, 1 1/2" or so
CCI Standard Velocity RN: can't find it but memory says it was in the .6's
YMMV, of course.
These are the best it did, and I couldn't do these every time - but all the groups were nice. The mini-mags had a different point of impact, off by a couple inches or so, and I can't remember which way. With the peep sight, I had to work to get 3/4" to 7/8" groups. Every time I blink, I get a different sight picture.......sigh.
Didn't try any bigbox bulk blasting ammo, it's possible to get benchrest accuracy out of tin can grade ammo, but the odds are lottery-type against it. Each rifle will have its own favorite ammo. Mossies usually do very well accuracy-wise, even the semi-autos. Enjoy!
Edited to add: Haven't shot it at 100, but I intend to by and by.

Thank you for the info. I did some googling and found this rifle to be consider pretty accurate. I saw the word tack driver many times.

I also looked to see if I could find the rate oftwist on this rifle. No luck. Does anyone know the twist rate for this rifle? I would assume it likes a little slower speed as this was manufactured from 1954-1958, probably around 1200fps. I'll have to give it a thorough work over and see what it does.

I have a cabela's (vortex as I was told by the sale rep) 3-9 x 40 .22BDC scope. I almost hate to take the mossberg period scope off this rifle. I might just to see what kind of accuracy I can get with it nd then try theCabela's if needed..

I have a 146Ba and I have never actually measured the groups but I would say 1" with aperature sights and bulk ammo. I have a Mossberg scope for mine but I swapped it out for a cheapo Bass Pro scope. I can put 10 rounds of bulk ammo into one hole easily at 50 yds. I don't run match ammo through anything I have, the one box of Eley I tried in this rifle was less accurate than thunderbolts.

Mossberg accuracy..........

When I was on the high school rifle team back in the early 1960's we had several Mossberg 144LS. Usually I tried to get a Winchester 52 or M2 Springfield but when those were taken I shot the 144LS. I usually did pretty well with the Mossbergs, they like the Winchesters and Springifelds were obtained thru the CMP program as surplus.

Wow thats a nice one. They are great shooters. I've found that the 40grn RN profile seems to be more accurate consistently than lightter HPs. Just and observation. Might be how they ride in the older Mossberg barrels. But the 146,s are generally very accurate. A full size sporter for sure.:t Oh and get ANYTHING else to try than ThunderTurds! Won't do your 146 justice. Just lead the bore and frustrate you. Darn "Turds".

I picked up a 146b myself recently and I'm in love. My other Mossbergs are super jealous. Anyway, I haven't done any serious groupings yet. Also, when using the advanced search I put in "146b" and below that chose the search titles only. There are 10 very useful pages of threads instead of the 200+. Good luck with yours.
