wanted to see what you fine folks thought about realistic valuations of 550-1's.

poked around on gunsamerica some, and saw some prices that kind of surprised me...here are some examples, are these typical of what collectors are paying? been toying with the notion of selling off some safe queens , and am trying to get an idea of pricing that is fair to all parties. i would rate mine at 97-98%+....MFR date coding shows mine at March '56 if i looked that up correctly.

looks like most listed are between $375-$450.

all thoughts/comments appreciated.

If you want to sell that NIB 550-1 for $400 just PM me. I paid $500 for my NIB 550-1 with everything and had to fight off bidders to get it, and this was a few years ago.

That said, I wouldn't pay more than $275 for any 550-1 in very good to excellent condition. Now a 550-P, 550-1P, or 550-2G is a different story. I have all three, a couple a few times over and you couldn't pry my hands off them.

The vast majority of my 550's/550-1's were priced between $45 and $250.

here's a pic of the one i am considering listing up...have yet to see another with original wood like this. naturally i'm hoping that 2 eccentric Billionaires with a taste for old Remingtons & nice wood will both get hung up on it.

if i read my date chart correctly, the A C date stamp means March of '56, that correct?

Yes March 1956. That's a beautiful stock, is it original with the original buttplate? I bought a few 550 Boyd's replacement stocks a while ago and a couple from Silver Hill recently, but I have never seen one that nice.

95% of mine have straight grained walnut, a few have a hint of tiger striping, but nothing like that. I would think that Remington let one get away. Check for the number "5" after the date code, it could be a Remington employee sale, I have a couple of those.

Congratulations, do you have a back story on it that you would care to share?

as far as i can tell, it is original, as is the buttplate. i bought it years ago from a gunshop whan an older gentleman traded in quite a few of his guns, and this was one of them. he had indicated he bought it new, and didnt recall if he had fired it. it certainly looked new. sure wish he had brought the box with it.

the only real wear on it is where its bumped a few others in the safe. i'm a pushover when it comes to good wood, and i like old remmys, so i grabbed it up of course.

i shot about a box of .22 shorts through it after i got it, i dont own a gun that doesnt get fired. shoots great.

after the date code is the number 40...had to look at the '0' because it alsmost looked like a "C" and was in a slightly smaller font size i guess you'd say.

Actually I have about 57 of them, lost actual count recently :) . No, I would not pay more than $275 for one in very good to excellent condition, but I would pay more for a NIB.

Here is a picture of mine. Date code KXX (May 1951). It has an oiled walnut stock while yours looks to be finished in a semi-gloss. Not unusual, for some reason Remington finished them both ways during this period. Later they all came in a gloss/semi-gloss finish. What is the date code on your's?

I have a 550-1. Can someone explain to me how to determine it's age? Thanks.
Lucky you!!! Just look on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver for a two or three letter code. Early ones will look like RSS later ones will have a two letter code like BC. Codes may have numbers behind them and proof symbols ahead and behind the letters. Then go to the 597 forum and look in the stickys for manufacturing dates.

Is it grooved for a scope?
