5.7x28 vs. .17 WSM?

Hello all! Not sure if this is the proper category, but I've been wondering about the 5.7x28 round as an intermediary between the 22 magnum and the .223.

Now, the thread title references the .17 WSM, which I think is it's closest competitor. Can anybody dig up any direct comparisons between them, or anything in the rimfire family?

I'm thinking of a round that's good to 200 yards with minimal drop, good wind bucking and much less noise/fuss that the .223 (I don't have a can-yet!). Reloading is a secondary issue at this time.

Post away and flame suit on!:D

How is the 5.7_ less "fuss" than the .223? The same gun was invented a hundred years ago called a 22 hornet. If it was a good defence cartridge they would have turned it into one then. It's another attempted by our European alies to push an European produced firearm and ammo into a military contracts. Not my favorite cartridge as you can tell. A total waste of taxpayers money. Total.

Nothing in rimfire, but if you keep it CF the 22 TCM is ballistically the same and much easier to reload for... esp. in a semi auto since the lube stuff isn't designed into the case

Rimfire 22 WMR or maybe 5mm RFM. Yes the 17 has the velocity but the 22 and 5mm have the heavier bullets to carry that velocity further down range. http://www.chuckhawks.com/magnum_rimfire_comparison.htm

221 Fireball for me, thank you. I find it does pretty much anything I want out of a .224 dia pill.

Need to reload to get full benefits out of many of these however. But if you do, the fireball is a good one to select. Comes in a CZ 527 as well.

The fireball is a much better rifle round than it is a pistol round.

do yourself a favor and do a little searching here and other forums. Seems folks that shoot this caliber speak quite highly of it. Reloading makes it into anything you want it to be, up to a point. I have read that with the CZ model sporting a 12" twist, you can shoot up to 62 grain bullets in it. I have not tried that. In fact, I have so far only shot the 55gr. FMJ as I had in mind to make myself the most accurate 22 squirrel rifle in a 7 pound or so class i could get. It is for sure all of that and then some. Shoots down to 1950 ft/sec and pokes a nice clean hole through the brain cavity. NO run offs ever expected with this. Reloading makes it a twice fun game. There are enough powders out there now for this caliber, that one can go up to the 3000 ft / sec areas with it with the right choice of pills and powder....

I shoot 22 rimfire benchrest when I am able. And I have some really nice shooting Anschutz rifles that cannot hold a candle to this 527. But in rimfire you are saddled with really expensive Match ammo that is of a lower order of magnitude than carefully tuned in hand loads. So yeah, it will do what you like.
