I'm in the process of purchasing my first 40X and am not highly knowledgeable on the history of this special rifle. Can any of you guys recommend a great site for learning more about the 40X? What years were these rifles made, and how many were made?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'll post a photograph of mine when it arrives.

I have used your book for about a year now and am amazed at all the information that you and Roy collected. Thank you for taking the time and effort to document the Remington 22 Rimfire Rifles so completely. Money aside, it is a true work of love, beautifully done. :bthumb::bthumb:

I appreciate all the good information about Remington sources. Believe it or not, I only live 20 minutes from the Remington world headquarters in Madison, NC. So, I think I'll go by there soon and see if anyone there can enlighten me on the history of my rifle. This rifle is a custom built by Gene Davis, and so it only has the 40X action. I don't have the original barrel. The action has "Remington 40-X" and the number sequence "0322" which leads me to think that it might be a very early model. One of my buddies speculates that it might have been built in the mid-1950s. Of course, Gene Davis went completely through it, and so it's mostly like new now in fuctionality. I'm buying it used, and so my information is somewhat limited.

Just wanted to update everyone on the history of the 40X I just bought. I contacted the Remington company, and they said this of the 0322 serial number:

"Your Model 40X was produced in 1955. In 1955 Remington announced 'an ultra precision .22 Long Rifle target rifle' the Model 40X Rangemaster. It was built for the growing demand for a precise range gun. This model was special production but this was before the Custom Shop was designated."

So this particular action was apparently made during the first year of production for the 40X. I love knowing the history of a rifle that I own.

I never checked any references on my 40x, I'm pretty sure it's from the 1st year of production, the stock was modified when I got it with a cheek piece, adjustable butt, barrel tensioner and Canjar trigger, but I have no idea when or who did it. It shoots spectacularly. :D

Yeah, I've been to the range twice. The first time I was just trying to become accustomed to the rifle and get my new scope set up and zeroed. The second time I shot several targets with outstanding (at least for me) results. I shot a USBR of 246-5X and an RBA of 247-21X. These were both outside at 50 yards with light wind. I've just been shooting benchrest for five months, so I was very pleased with that. They were both personal bests for me.

Yeah, 'fraid so.:p I got it last year in a web auction, spur of the moment bid got it for under $1000 delivered, but more than $300. The low number was a bid surprise when I unwrapped it.

Minor highjack....

I'm looking for specific information on the sporter, particularly the repeater. I've been piecing info together here and there, but it would be nice to find a more comprehensive source to educate myself. Most of what I come across is about the standard 40x and not the repeater. I've accumulated what I consider to be a nice selection of sporter weight bolt guns, but it just doesn't seem right without a 52 and 40x. I've decided the 40x will be first and then the hunt for the 52 will begin. I don't mind spending the money, I just want to make sure I'm getting what I want without surprises.

I have a few 40X's in 22LR. I have owned 52's and many other high end target guns. I have never owned a 52 sporter. The 40X is a very high end rifle. I have two sporters. One I made that is a single shot and one that I bought from a friend that is a repeater. I have always liked shooting 22's but when I get a 40X in my hands I just know it is going to be a good day.
