22lr chamber adapters or 22 WRF - First Hand Experiences?

Howdy,

I know that this gets asked a lot not only on this site, but a lot of other sites. From all the reading I have done (not to mention countless searches) it's hard to weed out the information people have provided only from having read it and not necessarily from first hand experience.

So I was wondering if any of you could help me out in the first hand experience area. Specifically I'm looking for how you have experienced accuracy or experienced the lack of accuracy in these setups.

What I am looking to do is this:

Squirrel hunt with a single shot .22mag rifle.

My first preference would be to use a chamber adapter from .22 mag to .22lr so I don't explode my quarry. I'm just not good enough yet for only head shots.

Secondary preference would be to use 22 WRF if I am able to find it.

I know both of these setups are possible and I can buy and/or make my adapter. What I cannot seem to find on the interwebs is first hand experience with the accuracy of 22mag to 22lr chamber adapters or 22 WRF in a 22 mag chamber. Does anyone have experience they can share?

Yes, the mace adapter is exactly what I am looking into.

My range would be 90% of the time 50 yards or less. Accuracy out to 100 yards would be nice, but not necessary. 2" groups at 50 yards would be ideal.

I'm not expecting the adapter to provide match grade accuracy or anything, but if it makes a decent rifle into a turd, I will need to come up with a different idea.

Hopefully there are some on here who have played around with this setup.

I think using adapters from MC Ace can be a hit and miss situation. Not that the adapters are bad, but if a larger cartridge gun has a rifling twist not suited for the smaller cartridge being fired through it, expectations should be lowered.

I have a stainless MC Ace adapter for shooting .32 ACP though a .308 rifle. It shoots at best 1" groups at 15 yards and things get worse further out. In this situation the problems are the .32 bullet is held so far back from the rifling and the bullet length (weight) isn't suited to a .308 rifling twist. Probably the speed differential and bore size don't help things either.

Now, I really think a .22LR ought to do much, much better going into a .22 WMR barrel using the adapter. If my Single Six with it's convertible cylinder is any indication.

It's been a LONG time, but I seem to remember that there are differences in bullet diameter AND case length between the 22LR and the 22WMR. I COULD BE dead wrong....... but I think you'd better check this out a little more before you try to interchange these. I don't know you from "Adam's house cat"......... but I would HATE to see you get hurt - whether I know you or not. PLEASE be careful......... FredT

Can someone explain to me how there can be a chamber adapter for .22LR in a .22WMR firearm? Yes, the magnum case is a tad larger in diameter as well as longer, but there's just not enough difference there to allow for a chamber insert.

Another vote for the .22WRF if you have a magnum forearm and need something with a bit less oomph.

I use MCACE 22LR in 22WMR adapters

I have used the 22LR in 22WMR chamber adapters since Harry Owen ran the business as Sports Specialties in Hacienda Heights, CA. They work well in 22WMR revolvers and single shot rifles or combination guns, but I've never owned a magazine fed rifle that would cycle them. I mostly use them as a source of cheap ammo when I'm warming up when shooting my 22WMR revolvers and for plinking with my Savage 24s combination guns and bolt actions chambered in 22WMR.

I don't think that they are particularly accurate, minute of beer can plinking accurate or maybe half-dollar accurate, but not 10-ring, dime, or even squirrel head accurate. That said, I shoot squirrels with the 17HM2 which is a very accurate and deadly squirrel killer.
