.22 Mag coyote ammo

Wondering what is better for coyote. I'd imagine you want it as fast as possible, so lighter weight, right? Then again, you also want penetration, right?

Does Barnes make one of their "X" bullets for .22 Mag? This would be lighter weight copper, yet still open up the petals for expansion once it penetrates enough to get them open.

If not this, then what? There are MANY choices out there.

Thanks.

The CCI maxi mags hold tighter groups than the game points in my CZ. I just tested that this morning. Speers makes a fast hollow point that patterns like a shotgun. So far in my testing the hornady v-max and the CCI maxi mags have been the most consistent in 2 of my guns and I have taken coyote with both loads. The v-max has been the most accurate by quite a bit so I will probably stick with those.

I use CCI 40gr jacketed hollow points and they do a pretty good job. I don’t use my 22 mag much for coyotes but the 2 I’ve shot with that ammo one was at about 75 yards and dropped instantly the other was at just over 100 yards and only ran about 30 yards before going down. My gun also shoots that ammo very well so that’s another thing to consider. I would stick with a heavier bullet like the 40gr that will have more of a punch. I also keep my shots with that gun fairly close, I wouldn’t even try a coyote at like 150 not because I couldn’t hit it but because I feel it’s not a good caliber for that far of a shot on that big of an animal.

.22 mag is effective inside 75 yds or so, however, be prepared to do some tracking. They will spin and run. If you want dead right there, shoot them in the head or take a .223.

Because the mag is a short range round, I don’t worry too much about velocity or accuracy. Penetration and expansion are the most important factors. For this reason, have always favored 40 grain for Yotes. Just tested some A22 - 35 gr and was impressed. Out penetrated 40 gr HP in wet newspaper. Going to give that a try that once deer season is over.

Hornady Critical Defense 45gr bullet. Have had great success from coyote size and smaller predators , 125 yards or less. Plus it shoots well out of my 10/22 magnum. Test many different brands and bullets, would suggest 40gr or heavier. Most important is repeatable, consistent accuracy. Your prey deserves a quick, clean kill.

Wish we could get someone to load these bullets into a .22 Magnum.

How does "transferring a huge amount of energy to the target in a very short timeframe" sound?

https://www.lehighdefense.com/index...axfilter=f1-product-type,bullets/f2-gun-type,rifle/f3-technology,close-quarters

How about "... provide extensive wound trauma with little minimal pass through energy. ... idea was to burst the bullet into numerous particles at a predetermined depth creating many wounds and a large temporary cavity with shot placement at or near the central nervous system. ... tried copper matrix frangible rounds and found the penetration depth and particle size were less than what was require for proper terminal performance.

... penetrate to a specific depth and to fracture as the internal hydraulic pressure exceeds the hoop strength of the nose design. At the time of fracture, a massive energy spike is released as the particles break away and radiate outward from the initial trajectory path. "

I shoot em with CCI 40 gr cause that is what I use. The main thing is to get the crosshairs on one of those killing machine sob's! If you lived in the country you would hate em like I do. Nothing is safe including small to medium dogs. I have no sympathy for them. Sorry for the rant.....

In my experience, 40 and 50 gr is much better than 30 gr. The 30 gr doesn't have enough penetration and I always have to shoot the critter a second time. 40 gr or heavier is usually a one shot kill.

I've had good luck with CCI 40 HP, CCI 40 Gamepoint and Federal 50 HP.

My first dedicated Coyote gun in 1991 was a Marlin 25MN 22mag with a TASCO 4X scope . I still use a 22 mag regularly for yotes because a significant portion of my hunting is in thick southern hardwood forests. In 1991 I started with the 40gr Winchester JHP and still consider it an excellent choice today. My top pick is the Federal 50gr hp. It will definitely penetrate a yote . Keep in mind a long shot for me is 75 yards and most are 50 or less .

Wish I still had the old Marlin but currently I am using a BRNO ZKM 611 Auto , a CZ552 Varmint , and a Ruger American Predator all in 22 mag.

I also use 22 Hornets and 223's in more open areas .

Saw a good article:

https://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2018/4/17/top-6-22-wmr-hunting-loads/

It looks like the Gamepoint might be the one for me:
"What stands out about this load is its terminal performance. Constructed more like a big-game bullet than one for varmints, the recovered bullet weighed 39.9 grains-virtually 100 percent weight retention. Moreover, the bullet, which measured 0.545-inch in diameter, created a large wound cavity and penetrated deep. For coyotes and other large nuisance species within the .22 Magnum's realm, there's none better."

I like the idea of deep penetration, mushrooming, and weight retention. I wonder if the same bullet in maybe a 36-38 grain loading would go a little faster, and expand a little more, but keep the other characteristics. Oh well, we'll take what we can get, I guess.

As far as factory rnds, I like the 35 gr gamepoint for fox, but prefer (as does my rifle) the 40gr Aguila for coyotes.. IMO, there is no perfect bullet! But I load a 45gr speer spitz for my CZ512 mag that manages to get a little over 1700 fps. This is a long bullet for the 22 magum! it is also way to tough for expansion @ mag velocity.. It is however deadly accurate in my rifle & to my way of thinking,if I can get this long heavy bullet spining in the chest cavity of a coyote it will do some major damage! If not,its still gonna hit where I aim & go all the way thru like a FMJ.

I was on the lookout for a 22 Mag for hunting jacks, cats and fox down here on the desert and asked this same question over at the Predatormasters forum and the consensus there was the Win Jacketed HP for coyote hunting and anything under.

They were one of the better shooting bullets in my CZ 455 Varmint, so I took it to a hunt in Elko, NV to blood it, it worked fine.
