Any one doing it? I am thinking I want something quieter than a .223. I need to shoot a coyote in the city.

Crabo;

I was but a lad at the time, and that time's been more than a handful of decades ago, but I did see the solution to your problem. And it's not a firearm.

Greyhounds that aren't fast enough to win at the track are frequently and constantly culled from breeder's inventories. Mostly, they're killed. But you can "adopt" them if you care to. They won't be family pets though & that's where most people who adopt them get into trouble. However, when I was working a summer job on a ranch in Wyoming, the rancher knew, or heard tell of, another rancher who had some adopted greyhounds. That rancher used 'em for coyote dogs. My guy took me along to see what it was all about one fine summer day.

The dog owner had put out a carcass the day before. He'd laid it where he wanted it, which allowed him to get his dogs into position without disturbing the coyotes. Greyhounds are fast, but don't have a lot of endurance. But, he sicced the dogs on a coyote that was feeding & the show was on!

Dog A went straight at the coyote, dog B headed out to the right a bit, & both closed on the coyote rapidly. Dog A hung just off the coyote's left flank & dog B curved in. The coyote was looking over his left shoulder at A. B hit the coyote on the right side like a bomb & then they both tore into it. I almost, but not quite, felt sorry for the coyote. Seen too much coyote damage to care about 'em.

Now how that guy trained 'em to operate that way I have no clue. But man, it was spectacular!

Pretty much all I use these days, works very well with the right suppressor.
I use an M.A.E Mini-T, officially for a rimfire, but works pretty good on .223 and excellent on the Hornet.
I also used it on a .243 for a while, not great, but very light for a walk about rifle, and fine if not shooting lots of rounds.

I'm considering a hornet, too, as I would also expect it to suppress better than a 223. Though, perhaps reduced power 223 loads would work just as well? Are you hand loader?

CB900F - What a fantastic story and experience! I'd not heard of that before

rico903 - Thanks for the reference. I went to YouTube and took a look. Wow!

Fella's;

That happened back in the 60's, before I joined the Army. Somewhere out in the middle of Wyoming, but I couldn't find the place if my life depended on it. I do know it was outside the north Platte river loop, & not too far from the Buzzard, which was the ranch I was working on at the time, but other than that, pretty dim memories on the location. I was about 16 or 17 at the time. I'll have to go look at Youtube & see if I can find that one.

300 Blackout loaded subsonic would be my under the radar choice for in town. Anything supersonic will still get a pretty good supersonic crack that might get you noticed. Never tried to load a Hornet to subsonic velocities but the Blackout will give you a fair amount more ft/lbs of swat at the lower velocity.:bthumb:
