I thought you guys would like to see my Savage 25 stock build. It’s walnut, with some ebony trim. The 22 Hornet is one of my favorite calibers.

I’ve got a CZ 527 that is very accurate. 3250 fps w/40 grain V-max. Measured using Oehler 35P.

I also have a couple Winchester Model 43 rifles In 22 Hornet. I shoot 35 grain V-max bullets out of them. Thy are good for ~ 3/4 - 1 inch groups at 100 yards.

This one is about done, barreled action is in Wyoming being color case hardened and blued and should be home in a couple weeks. Lots of photos throughout the thread.

I think I have a 10 inch Contender barrel too. I haven’t shot it.

The 22 Hornet is a terrific performer.

I took my CZ to Montana about fifteen years ago on a prairie dog shooting trip with a friend. He had never seen a 22 Hornet in the field. On the way home he remarked that he had absolutely no idea that the Hornet was anything like that. His varmint shooting had all been done with either 22LR or 223, 22-250 & 243

My friend has a single shot hornet and he shoots the ballistic tipped 40 gr out to 300. My savage 25 has a problem with the pointed bullet because they are too long to load in the magazine and it’s very hard to drop in a single round. If you reload the ballistic tip the length that will fit in the magazine, it will not fit in the neck, it will fall inside the case. I don’t think you can modify the magazine because the round would have to set a 1/4“ farther back.

When I got my CZ it shot well. I kind of liked it just fine, I guess. I was loading rounds as long as possible “chasing the lands,” but still way short of them. I bought a single shot adapter from Calhoon because as I loaded the bullets out closer accuracy was increasing. The 527 extractor does not snap over the rim, it is a controlled round feed arrangement.

Holy smokes, what a difference it made when I loaded bullets out to almost touch the rifling. I was aware James Calhoun modified the magazines to handle his longer 19 caliber cartridges, so I sent mine to him and had them done.

I went from really liking that rifle to loving it.

I knew the load I was using was pretty speedy, but hadn’t clocked them. We have a couple Oehler 35P chronographs and had one set up one day to see what we were getting out of some 300 Weatherby loads and just for the heck of it I shot a 22 Hornet through the screens. It clocked at near 3,250fps. I really didn’t believe that, so I shot four more through and they were all right there.
