10/22 competition versus Kidd supergrade

New here and looking for help. I have a 10/22 LVT that has been a great shooter, but interested in a better version. Can anyone comment on how much better a kidd supergrade would be than the 10/22 competition, especially given the price difference? Or should I get a new stock and send the 10/22 LVT off to be accurized? Thanks in advance. Long time stalker of this great forum!

I've been off the forum for a few days. one night my computer crashed maybe 30 times. I didn't count. It would run for a random time then no blue screen just a thud and a black screen. I'd start it back up, rinse and repeat.

I know nothing about the Ruger in question. But I do have a KIDD SG that I REALLY love! The KIDD is just superb that's the only way it can be described.

I am the weak link in the shooting equation and the rifle makes me look good. I've allowed the folks manning the range I go to shoot it. Everyone who shoots it loves it. I have to talk them through the use of the 2 stage 8/8 trigger but once they understand it their eyes light up and I get a smile... every time. After it arrived and I assembled it I brought it back to the LGS and talked them through the trigger. Again, eyes lit up and smiles. Every time.

I don't shoot 5 shot groups. I shoot 30 round groups and the groups can be covered by a nickle if I do my part. I know when I've thrown the shot. Doesn't happen often but it does happen.

I bought it as a 12#+ bench rifle. But I wanted to use it in an Appleseed. and it clearly wasn't going to work for that at 12#. I also wanted a lighter field rifle. One thing the SG can do is convert to another rifle in under 5 minutes. I bought the KIDD "tactical" chassis so even the buttstock can be changed.

Maybe Ruger can do this but I doubt that it can and get these results... I bought a SG ULW barrel changed it and adjusted the scope for the 1/2" it was off @ 50 yards. Fired some more and dialed it back to exactly where I started. Different barrel, same zero. The ULW barrel appears to be just as accurate as the heavy one. But since the setup is for light weight and not the best shooting experience it suffers from that. But that's that particular setup. I need to test the barrel further and to do that I'll use the bench setup and just change the barrel. Oh, and mix and match scopes, or make a hybrid conversion... still retains zero. I never saw anything like it and I thought every time I changed the barrel I'd need to zero it at the range. Nope. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe that's why I paid the big bux.

I've had other Rugers but they all got sold except for the Charger I SBRed and use for steel challenge. It took me years to get it to where I wanted and I'm keeping it. The only Ruger parts on it are the receiver, BX trigger, and mags.

I posted these pix a number of times, but here goes again so that I don't need to track them down on the forum and link to them.

As purchased.

After a less than 5 minutes conversion. If I remember correctly it weighs 6# 8 ozs in this configuration.

They don't give them away, but the level of workmanship is there so the price is justified IMO. It's made up to a quality and not down to a price. I know lots of folks like Ruger but I'll never own another. I simply have no need.

Imo and ime, since I got “both”, those 2 rifles aren’t in the same class, both quality/accuracy and cost-wise, so while I suppose you can compare them, it would be like comparing a 911 to a Mustang.
If you don’t mind shelling out couple grand or thereabouts just get a Supergrade or a Classic for that matter and be done.
Oh - do you actually have a line on a gunsmith that’ll “accurize” your LVT?
If not, with Randy gone it won’t be super easy to find one…
Good luck - however you proceed 👍😎

Thanks for the info. I had read about Randy being gone and I don't have a good source :( What you said makes sense. I figured with the price difference there had to be a good reason, and I have heard nothing but praise for the Kidd. I just couldn't find much about the competition. I am very much leaning to Kidd at this point. Thanks again.

I have a Kidd Supergrade. It has been 100% reliable and sub MOA with SK and Eley ammo since I got it. I've used it at Appleseed both days, about 500 rounds without cleaning and no issues.

A friend of mine got the 10/22 Competition shortly thereafter. He didn't like the BX trigger, so ordered one from Kidd. With the $ he has in it, he could have bought a used Kidd and had a superior rifle. He took his to an Appleseed and it didn't make it through the first day. Spent rounds were getting stuck in the chamber to the point they had to be driven out with a rod. It is now back a Ruger getting fixed.

I'm not bashing Ruger, I have several of them and consider them to be pretty good firearms for the money. I carry one when discretion is paramount.

There were 2 Kidds for sale in the marketplace in the last month or so that weren't but a few $ more than the Ruger Competition.

Just took my Supergrade out for the first time a few days ago. My setup is just one big bag, which worked fine in the past for plinking, but now I’m realizing it’s holding the SG back. I’m very inconsistent but it shot several 1/2” 3-shot groups with SK semi-auto at 50, and even one that was 3/8”. First time in my life it’s ever felt easy, give or take my teeter-totter bag setup.

I forgot to add...

If you don't want to buy match grade ammo the SG will only shoot to the what the ammo is capable of. No magic there. I tried off the shelf ammo and got mehhh results. But I just had to try the cheap stuff. I switched to SK Long Range and Match Rifle and it started to show what it could do.

I have owned a dozen or so KIDD rifles and currently shoot NRL22 with several.
I have lot tested barrels on multiple actions …classic and SG.
I also have one of these Ruger Comps.
The Ruger is SHOCKINGLY accurate with lot tested Center X…..routinely .3s and an occasional .2. I know some one who made it into the top 30 nationally in NRL22 shooting base class with this exact rifle.
BUT …… this is what can be attained with lot testing not only ammo but barrels as well from KIDD.
This particular barrel with shoot .2 or better consistently.
Set up….
Full KIDD barreled action 20inch blued chromoly barrel non threaded
KIDD 2 stage trigger 8oz/oz
KIDD precision chassis

I have both and they are actually fairly similar. Both rely on two action screws (with the rear tang) and both are machined receivers. I do think my SG is a little more accurate but not by much. Can’t go wrong with either IMO.

If you go the Kidd route they have 10% off discount codes. One is: 22rsskidd

Good luck
Thanks for the input. I did buy a kidd barrel and trigger kit and MDT field stock for the current 10/22. I am loving it. I have another stock and trigger, so I will probably do the SG barrelled action for my next project.
