A younger friend of mine dropped this off today. He wants me to look it over, check it out and clean it up a little. He wants to give it to his 10-year-old

First off, inner mag tube is incorrect.
Inner mag tube is about three inches short and the end thingy doesn't bend around.

Another very rusty Stevens bolt rifle arrived with this WWF also.

I'm seriously thinking about simply painting them ultra flat black. Don't laugh, I've done this before, and the results were very good.

I think "Satin' is the word mostly used now for semi-gloss. You definitely don't want gloss or flat black.
The paint will also fill in some of the pitting, etc.:)

Washed stock
Went over stock with steel wool
Applied one coat of Watco dark walnut.
Wire wheeled buttplate & trigger guard, then painted.....!

No, but I have plenty of power wire wheel tools. Die grinders to bench grinders with wire wheels. (y)

Dressed it up a little with receiver plug screws (missing #4 sight) and a sling.
Test fired it three times, fires, ejects, and runs good. (y)
Because of the missing inner mag tube, it will remain a single shot, but it is easy to load one at a time.

The rust bucket Stevens..........! Remember, this is not my rifle, just trying to clean it up a little for a friend. :) Post #21 shows some before pics.

I sanded the stock with my Mouse sander. (120 grit)
Stained stock with dark Walnut. Rubbed stock down, then sprayed it with Ace Polyurethane clear gloss.

Wired wheeled the barrel and receiver, then painted them with Ace black satin rattle can.
