Valmet "Suomen Leijona" (Finnish Lion) .22LR single-shot rifle vs 100m plates

Some mother's day funzors.

Mine is one of the later models of the "Finnish Lion" 50m competition rifle.
Single shot, no magazine, diopter sights with 11mm cuts for scope added... but with a scope it will eject shells right into the scope and you will have ejection problems more often than not..

With an optic this is my most accurate rifle indoors, outdoors wind affects it a lot since the barrel is so long that with standard velocity ammo the bullet exits the nozzle subsonic - thus very quiet report. I have consistently hit beercan size targets at 160 meters with a cheap optic. Recoil is non-existent, it weights over 5 kilos.

I opted to switch back to the diopter sights because the quality of their manufacture, as the rest of the rifle, is so incredible.

I sadly modified this gun a bit 10 years ago, I dremeled the aluminum underside rail a bit to fit a standard hunting-style sling attachment point to which I attached a Harris ultralight bipod. I have all the original slings and different diopters and different front sight reliefs. By replacing the aluminium rail this would be 100% original again.

The trigger is the best I have experienced and I have shot Anschutz etc. Then again at that level my finger is not professional enough to discern any difference.

Best group yesterday: 5 shots, CCI Standard ammo, 4cm group at 100 meters using the original iron sights.

Falling some reactive targets:

Sorry, not english wikipedia article.
The finnish article contains pics of a late version.

The Valmet has never gotten the recognition in this country that it deserves. They are great rifles and will shoot right along with the Anschutz, 40X etc. If you get a chance to pick one up without ripping off an arm or leg to pay for it, do so, you will not be disappointed at all. :bthumb:

I had one back in the early 80's. Got it to shoot smallbore matches in Maryland. Ended up picking up the NRA distinguished expert medal with it. It was a big huge, heavy rifle, and it shot probably better than any other .22lr target rifle I ever used. Went crazy and started shooting high power and the small bore fell by the wayside. I sold it when I retired and moved out west.

Please can anyone direct me where to pick up a pdf manual / schematic of the Valmet .22 target rifle...
I just picked one up.. not shot it yet but need to find out about the action screws torque.. It seems to have only one action screw but there is another one on top on the back of the action, not sure if this is also an action screw.. I would like to learn more about the rifle, how to care for it and properly torque the action screw(s) .. Any info would be hugely appreciated.. Thank you
