Tikka vs. CZ

This last summer I had the opportunity to shoot a new CZ 457 Varmint and a new Tikka T1X side by side during our Rimfire League at my local gun club. I shot eight different types of ammo out of each gun. We used the USRA 50/50 target, the center ring was an X used as a tie breaker and the second ring is the 10 ring. 25 bulls per target for a possible 250 point per target.

SO, eight targets with eight different brands of ammo for each gun. On average:

CZ shot 227 w/8Xs
Tikka shot 238 w/12Xs

The Tikka shot better with all ammo except one. I went through all sixteen targets and counted up what I considered fliers which would be any shot greater than an a 1.5 MOA.

CZ - 54 fliers
Tikka - 25 fliers

CZ Tikka
Ammo. Score/Xs/Fliers
SK Match. 238/6/2. 248/19/0
SK LR Match. 228/6/7. 240/12/2
Eley Sub-Sonic. 229/8/7. 243/9/1
Eley Club. 232/13/5. 241/13/3
Eley Target. 230/13/6 240/12/3
CCI SV. 200/5/12. 240/17/2
Federal Match. 231/5/7. 219/7/9
Federal Match HV. 224/7/8. 230/8/5

Average. 227/8/7 238/12/3

The CZ was scoped with a Vortex Crossfire 6-18x44 and the Tikka has a Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50

An interesting comparison and obviously took a good bit of time and effort to do it. However, given the variables and idiosyncracies of .22 rifles and ammos (lot-to-lot variation), you have a very limited statistical sampling. Your results are applicable to the two rifles (and ammos and their lot #s) that you tested, but no others. For example, I bought a T1x early on and the best I could get out of it, even with premium ammo, was minute of squirrel. The rifle looks great and operates smoothly and handles nicely -- and that particular rifle is great for exactly that -- squirrel hunting. I recently bought another and two range trips so far show it has far more accuracy promise than my first one. I'll be keeping this one. Luck of the draw. The old saying, YMMV.

I divested myself of all my CZ rifles with the exception of a 452 Scout and a 527 7.62X39 Carbine and replaced them with two Tikka T1x rifles (.22LR and .17HMR) in KRG Bravo chassis and an Anschutz 1710 in an XLR chassis. I don't miss the CZ's at all. They were a fun experiment, but I have moved on.

I'm really happy with my T1x at this point. There's a lot of things to like about it. I only have maybe 300-400 rounds through so far but I'm pretty happy with how it's shooting considering it's a sporter. I've yet to shoot any high end ammo out of it. Mostly SK Magazine, Eley Action, and various lots of SK Rifle Match. I looked back at my targets and there's some really nice groups (with all ammo mentioned) and some that are just so so. I haven't measured everything but I think it's safe to say it averages 1/2" or less. I'll take it considering the poor benches they have at the range I was shooting at and I wasn't using my wind flags.

At one point I told myself that it was shooting better than my CZ 452 American. I just looked back at some groups I shot with the CZ and it appears that's not necessarily true. The CZ has shot some really nice targets too and with what I consider to be lower grade ammo.

So I think it's a toss up between my T1x and 452 American. Throw in the Anschutz 1416 I recently got and I think I'm very fortunate to have 3 excellent shooting sporters

I am a fan of the CZ rifles, I have had some that were quite good and probably will again, the T1X's that I have experienced were quite awesome for the money, I say on average more accurate than 90% CZ's I have owned, Id even say that in their price range they are hard to beat accuracy wise. Of course thats going to vary from rifle to rifle. I have shot 247's on the factory IBS targets with mine, 2500's on the ARA factory class target.

My shooting buddy bought a new CZ 457 soon after I bought my T1X. A few weeks later we took them to the gun club and met some buddies there for some fun. The T1X out shot the 457 by a good margin. We swapped rifles and the result was the same.

I have to say though that his CZ is a looker and would be a fine squirrel rifle.

I have a 452 varmint and a T1x in HMR. Both good shooters, comparable accuracy. Generally MOA at 50 and 100, better on occasion. The Tikka is less ammo sensitive and is my favorite. Much lighter and threaded. Shooting almost exclusively suppressed these days.

Ok, getting distracted here. Was developing a fixation for a CZ 22lr in the coming year with a scope. Have the 22lr ammo and don't want to go ammo chasing at this time.

The Tikka T3X 22lr seems to be a couple hundred more and synthetic stock rather than wood.

Doesn't it make sense for me to stay focused on CZs?

I guess that depends on personal preference and which CZ you're considering

If you compare the CZ 457 American Synthetic to the Tikka T1x the CZ appears to be a little less expensive. I only have a 452 American and no 457 at this point but, from everything I've read, the 457 is a fine rifle too. I like that you have the ability to easily add a different barrel to the CZ. That said, I went with the Tikka this time because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I haven't been disappointed with my decision

Diito, on the T1X not being that ammo sensitive. Shoots all about the same. Thats one reason I love it. The CZs shoot well also but, thats dependent on the ammo. My 452s might shoot a hair tighter group than the Tikka, but thats using Rifle Match ammo where as the Tikka is using CCI. Also a little will depend on what forum you post this question on. Another accurate rifle that I have is the Savage Mark II FV. Inexpensive but shoots well.

Maybe a little late, I have a CZ 455 American synthetic stock, and a Tikka T1x. The 455 seems to require more tuning on the action bolts to get it honed in, it likes Aguila SV. The Tikka seemed to shoot better out of the box (still had to but the Wheeler FAT wrench on it). And shoots Lapua Center X. Both guns shoot better than my ability, and MOA at 100. The Tikka does shoot tighter at the longer 200 range

Heres why I like the Tikka.....Midas + 50 yards 14x scope, very accurate little rifle, another thing I like about the Tikka, they dont seem to need to be cleaned much if any at all, I have fired strings of 100s of rounds with with various ammo with no loss in accuracy that I can tell.

Hadn't shot in about 6 months and decided to head to the range this morning after seeing and posting on this thread. Since I own both rifles I feel I can give an honest review on the two. Both guns were cleaned last night,

The CZ is an american synthetic, vortex diamondback 2-7x, and likes Aguila SV.

The Tikka T1x has a Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40mm, and shoots best with Lapua Center X.

Both scopes are mounted on Burris Elpitical rings, mechanically centered, and zero'd at 50 yrds. The Leupold has 113 MOA adjustment on windage and elevation the Vortex is 100 MOA both directions. I chose these scopes as we challange ourselves out to 300 yrds some days.

There was a crosswind of 10.4 mph from the South. I shot 15 rds. to foul the barrel on the CZ and 5 rds. on the Tikka, I used a 1" dot and shot until I got 3 consecutive rounds in the dot. Both guns are more capable than I am, and I enjoy shooting both.

If I had to chose between the two I would give the edge to the Tikka

CZ is on the left and Tikka on the right.

I bought my 1st CZ 452 zmk 22lr 18 years ago at a local gun show for $250. I found it to be gorgeous and accurate. In the following years I have picked up a 455 ultra lux 22lr, a 457 varmint 17hmr, a 512 in 22wmr, and a 457 American 22lr which has an ultra lux barrel.

I have also acquired a Bergara BMR 22lr, and a Ruger precision rimfire 22lr. Personally I shoot the 457 American with the ultra lux barrel the best.

I am currently awaiting shipment of my Tikka T1X 22lr. Looking forward to doing my own comparison.

Keep us posted on the T1x. Owning a couple of amazingly accurate CZ 457 Varmint MTR's I purchased a CZ American Synthetic a couple of months ago as a carry squirrel hunting rifle being the season was about to open and the Tikka was not available. The CZ Synthetic is great as a carry rifle but is just an ok rifle in the accuracy department. After all is said and done it's one of those should'a, would'a, could'a scenarios where I'm now second guessing if I should have just used my old Marlin 881 at the beginning of squirrel season and waited on a Tikka T1x.

I tend to think this is more about how a specific brand fits you and if you get a shooter. I have an Anschutz 1717D that is a bizarrely, amazing shooter. Fits me very well. I purchased a suppressor, just HAD , to have a threaded barrel. Bought a used tikka17hmr. Kitted it out the way I wanted. Shooter no doubt. Had to push the string. Bought bergara bmr 17hmr. Kitted it out. Shooter. Found out Steyr zephyr 2 17hmr was being discontinued. Ohh my we can't do this, back and forth. Bought it kitted it out. Shooter. Am I lucky they all shoot lights out. Maybe. Point is already evident methinks. All these manufacturers make good products. Very good products. Get what fits your groove and enjoy. If it doesn't shoot get something else. My experience tells me most rifles will shoot better than I can. A few I can outshoot. I don't really shoot seriously with .22 anymore. Just for fun. The 17hmr I take more seriously than I should. Ask my wallet. Enjoy yourselves. Happy New Year.

I also got rid of all my 457's. The only ones I found that shot really well were the 457 American. The Varmint shot horrendously, and I easily outshot my MTR's with the American with its whippy barrel. I am really no longer a 457 fanboi whatsoever.

My CZ453 on the other hand will shoot better than any other rimfire I have ever owned or fired. Just amazing accuracy.

Our (I say our as it is technically the wife's) T1x is nowhere near the 453, but its certainly better than the 457 MTRs by a good margin.
