Rimfire ammo Lapua X-Act now costs more than most centerfire ammo.

Maybe we need some target leagues that only allow Golden Bullets and you just do the best you can. I know my local range a decade or so back had some shoots like that. They didn't specify, but you had to show a receipt showing you didn't pay over X dollars for the ammo being used. It was about twice the going price for GB's at the time, but not much.

Like the IROC racing series, if I remember right or Indy cars now, I have read and agree if leagues just relegated ammo to a certain price or brand, the chase for the best bullet would end if you were in that league. The example always seems to be CCI SV. If they restrict weapons like Anschutz in certain leagues or rifle weights, why not the obvious reg to use only a certain ammo? Is it ego that people won't have dime sized holes to show at the club on a regular basis?

I gave up on buying high power centerfire rifle ammo (.303 Brit., .308 Win.) years ago, except those cheap German DAG .308 plastic training rounds I got sometimes from my local gunsmith, for about $ 9 / box of 50 rounds.

The cheapest ammo for these surplus rifles was already just short of 1 buck a round of S & B FMJ some years ago, but now they're much more, like $ 1.30 to 1.40.

Similar problem is .45 ACP... These have never been "cheap" at all, but nowadays... that isn't worth it anymore. Still have some boxes, but won't buy any more now.

So if I shoot centerfire, it's .38 Special/.357 Mag or 9 mm, and .32 ACP, all of which I've stockpiled a reasonable amount from better times.

All I still buy is .22 lr ammo, except those top tier match rounds. It's still affordable, precise enough, goes bang, and has the power to punch a hole into the target cardboard, or kick down a steel plate at the usual distances.

While I still love centerfire, I’ve really cut back and focused on rimfire for most of my shooting. I’ve jumped into things like Appleseed, where I have a goal/purpose, method to train and practice and something I can do socially every couple of months. It has helped fill the void of centerfire for me.

Way back in the early days of the RFC we had a few rounds of $7/box competitions. As I recall they were all 25yds with a USBR card. The difference back then was $7/box meant for an entire brick but it could be changed for current prices.

It was the great equalizer as I recall, even the most dedicated benchguns were not run away winners.

I remember not that long ago people were camping out at Walmart to buy any kind of .22lr they could find, and then flip it at the local gun show. Stories of Walmart store managers being in on the deal as well as some on-line vendors with crazy prices. I think it was Cheaper Than Dirt with ammo for $1.00 a round. Point is that there was a time you couldn't even get bulk ammo.

Now I see that Target Sports USA and others are flooded with bulk and mid grade ammo, and fairly reasonable prices, and no one is buying. I know warehouses are filling up, but that will all change at some point soon. This cycle repeats itself ever so many years.

If your bulk and sporting ammo inventory isn't stocked to where you would like it, it's not a bad idea to do a bit of shopping around.

Big 5 Sporting Goods here is So Cal ran a special on Blazer 22LR at $.08/round making a brick $40. I dropped by in the afternoon to see what was left and there was plenty. maybe 10 bricks.. I think it's decent ammo but none of my hand guns like it. In the rifles its not too bad but not Eley.. Im always on the hunt for CCI SV.

There are several factors involved in our meds and many other items being made in china, such as the epa, insurance companies, govt regulations , etc. Then there is pure corporate greed, bean counters, stockholders to answer to and all the while china is amassing more control over us. The chinese know exactly what they are doing which is why they buy only the finest politicians and corporate execs.

I try to stay a couple years ahead on ammo and reloading supplies so I can ride out these storms. I will add that during some of our recent ammo droughts and subsequent exorbitant prices being paid, all those companies were quiet taking note of just how much we would pay for a given product.

edited for spelling as the keyboard can’t read my mind.

Get set to see ammo go up even higher when the new tariffs kick in.

Did you know that there is now a tariff on imported copper and lead and we have no lead smelters in the U.S. And China in a retaliatory rage has cut off all antimony shipments to the U.S.( we get most of our antimony from China) If you think $33.00 a box is high you ain't seen nothing yet!

Let's face facts there is a limit to what people can afford to pay and for way too long the Wholesalers and the Ammo companies have been laughing all the way to the bank. They may just be digging their own graves because if there is a downturn in the economy people will quit buying anything but the essentials such as food and medicine and if the Ukraine war ends the bottom will drop out of the ammo demand and some of the Ammo companies may even go belly up. No one is going to buying ammo even for two dollars a box while standing in an unemployment line. We have been long overdue for a big crash in the economy. I do not say this lightly as too soon people forget that two of the biggest factors that led to the U.S. 1929 depression was a trade war and high tariffs which in turn led to a complete Global economic meltdown.

He who does not know the past is condemned to relive it in the future.

What led to the 1929 crash was an over supply of loans to American farmers to feed Europeans who couldn't feed themselves after WWI. When the Europeans recovered their ability to grow their own supply, prices for American farm products plunged.

Tariffs were never the cause of the US Great Depression. Over supply of both loans and production were.

Today, it's an over supply of Congressional "funding" fueled by the Federal Reserve's fiat currency. When was the last omnibus bill not passed? When was the last time the Federal Reserve didn't accommodate with cheap borrow from Peter to pay Paul currency shenanigans?

But, don't worry "crypto" will save us! [Sarcasm]. Why are all the central banks so keen on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)?

I hate to say it but you had better run out and buy a good air gun now as in the future, maybe the very near future, a pellet gun is all you will be able to afford to shoot. I have been to a poor East European Country and the gunshop there only had pellet guns for sale. There was even a stuffed wild boar standing there on the floor so it can be done.

The problem is if your a serious competitor you have to buy the best ammo to give your self a chance to win. The other top shooters will certainly come with selected lots of the best ammo money can buy. A lot of people just shoot for fun, but a lot of others enjoy pitting themselves against the best shooters they can find and get a lot of satisfaction if they win. The solution is for American companies to solve this. No market you say? That’s what people said a few years ago about rifles. Then Vudoo appeared and proved there was a big market for exceptionally accurate rifles. Now Bergara, Rim x, and several others have jumped in. Guaranteed the majority of those rifles are being fed European ammo because US ammo is so poor that everyone who is shooting some kind of precision 22 game is using European ammo.
When I was young back in the 90’s Federal produced super good match ammo that was at least as good as European brands maybe better. The 92 US Olympic team used it to win gold.
It can and should be done.

However, there are many more non-serious competitors. So using a less than stellar, but standard ammo lets people enjoy friendly non-serious competition without all the angst about ammo. Some of them will become serious if they get a taste of competition. Cheap ammo lets more people compete and ultimately would probably increase the number of serious competitors in time.
